Okay, so I'm listening to a book about warrior cats. In my car. During sacred garage time. And honestly? I'm not even embarrassed anymore.
Here's how this happened: Emma (7) got obsessed with the Warriors series after her friend brought one to school. Lucas (5) wanted in because Emma was into it. And somehow I became the designated audiobook screener because apparently that's a job now. But here's the thing - I actually got hooked. Like, genuinely invested in these cats and their drama. Tigerclaw is basically the office backstabber we all had at our old jobs, except he's a giant tabby cat plotting murder. It tracks.
When Cat Politics Gets Real
Rising Storm is book four, and by now I'm fully committed to Fireheart's journey from outsider to deputy. This one hits different though. The previous villain got exiled, but instead of feeling like a victory lap, everything feels... heavy. Fireheart is basically running ThunderClan while Bluestar spirals into depression, there's a secret about one of the apprentices that made me gasp out loud (in the school pickup line, got some looks), and the whole forest is baking in a heat wave that you KNOW is building to something bad.
What I appreciate about these books - and I say this as someone who reads a lot of contemporary fiction that's supposedly for adults - is that they don't talk down to kids. Characters die. Leaders fail. Good cats make terrible choices. That same willingness to let characters face real consequences shows up in Eldest, where the fantasy stakes feel genuinely earned. My kids aren't listening to this one yet (Baby Sophie would just yell "KITTY!" over everything), but when they do, there's actual stuff to discuss. Not in a heavy-handed way. Just... life happens, even to cats.
MacLeod Andrews Deserves a Raise
Look, I've listened to a LOT of kids' audiobooks. A lot. Some narrators sound like they're reading a grocery list. Some go so over-the-top that I want to drive into a ditch. MacLeod Andrews? He just gets it.
Every cat sounds distinct. I can tell who's talking without the dialogue tags, which is huge when you're half-listening while mentally calculating whether you have enough chicken nuggets for dinner. Fireheart sounds earnest without being annoying. Bluestar's deterioration comes through in her voice - it's subtle but devastating. And when things get tense (and they GET tense), his pacing ramps up in a way that had me sitting in my garage for an extra ten minutes just to see what happened next.
Apparently he's won Audie Awards and Earphones Awards, which - yeah. Makes sense. The man is doing actual character work here, not just reading words.
Survived 47 Pauses and Still Made Sense
This is my highest praise for any audiobook. At just under 8 hours, I finished this in about a week of fragmented listening. School drop-offs. Sophie's nap times (when she actually napped, which was like three times). Garage sanctuary sessions. And every single time I came back, I knew exactly where I was and what was happening.
The chapters are a good length - not so short that you feel like you're constantly starting and stopping, not so long that you lose the thread. The plot moves. Things happen. There's no filler where cats just sit around discussing their feelings for forty pages. (I mean, they have feelings. But they're also doing stuff.)
One thing - the description says "Non-Fiction" which is absolutely wrong. These are fictional cats. Very fictional. I don't know who tagged it that way but they need to fix that.
Who's This For (And Who Should Run)
If your kid is into the Warriors series and you're stuck on audiobook duty, you might as well enjoy the ride - this one's actually good. Skip it if you need to start at book one (you'll be lost), or if cat clan politics sounds like your personal nightmare.
The Mom Verdict
Is this groundbreaking literature? No. Is it a well-crafted, genuinely engaging story with excellent narration that kept me company during the hardest parts of my day? Yes.
The ending builds to something genuinely dramatic (the storm in the title is not a metaphor, or wait, maybe it is, but also it's literal), and I immediately downloaded the next book. At 1.25x speed, because I'm not speedrunning, I'm surviving.
Car time approved. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go explain to Emma why she can't name the new hamster Tigerclaw.
