Your DNA Is Weirder Than Your Codebase
Sam Kean structures this book around the greatest hits of genetics, and I mean that in the best way. Each chapter is essentially a standalone story anchored to a specific genetic concept. You get Paganini's freakishly flexible fingers (the titular violinist's thumb, caused by a connective tissue disorder that gave him superhuman dexterity), you get the Hapsburg jaw getting progressively worse through generations of royal inbreeding, you get the women of Hiroshima whose survival stories rewrite what we thought about radiation and mutation.
The chapter on how scientists discovered that humans and Neanderthals interbred - and way more recently than anyone was comfortable admitting - had me grinning like an idiot on the train. Kean doesn't just tell you the finding; he walks you through the detective work, the competing labs, the moment when the data became undeniable. It's structured like a good mystery, which is exactly what keeps you hooked during a 12-and-a-half-hour listen.
Where it gets really interesting is the section on epigenetics and art - how mutations that should be purely destructive can sometimes create something extraordinary. The idea that the same genetic "bugs" (yes, I'm going there) that cause disease in some contexts produce genius in others? That's the kind of framework that sticks with you. But he's not going to make you feel things the way a top-tier narrator does. There's no particular warmth or personality that elevates the material. He's the equivalent of a clean, well-documented API - does exactly what it's supposed to, no surprises, no delight. For a pop science book, that's honestly fine. You're here for Kean's storytelling, not for vocal pyrotechnics.
I listened at 1.5x and it worked perfectly. Leyva's pacing is measured enough that speeding up doesn't lose any clarity. I wouldn't go above 1.5x though - some of the genetic mechanisms require your brain to actually process what's being described, and at 1.75x you'll miss the connections Kean is building.

At 12+ hours, this is a serious time commitment, and here's where I'll be honest: not every chapter earns its length. The middle section drags a bit - there's a stretch where Kean covers genetic history that feels more like a textbook than a story, and I caught myself zoning out somewhere around Mountain View station (to be fair, that station makes everyone zone out).
