I Am Pilgrim was one of those attempts—gripping but exhausting in a way this wasn't.

Ben Ripley keeps flunking Advanced Self Preservation. He can't ski. He fumbles with weapons. And yet somehow he's survived kidnappings, missiles, and ticking time bombs through sheer luck and quick thinking. Stuart Gibbs has created something my kids desperately need to see - a hero who succeeds not because he's naturally gifted but because he's persistent and clever. The whole premise of this one (befriend the daughter of a suspected Chinese crime boss at a ski resort) is ridiculous in the best way. Ben's not James Bond. He's the kid who would trip over his own skis while trying to look cool, and that's exactly why it works.
The humor actually landed for me, which - let's be honest - doesn't always happen with books aimed at the 8-12 crowd. I had the same problem with Regulators—humor that should've worked but mostly just fell flat. There's a running thread about Ben's best friend from home showing up and nearly blowing his cover that had me doing that silent-laugh thing in the car so my neighbors wouldn't think I'd finally lost it.
Gibson Frazier Knows His Lane
Here's where I have to adjust my usual narrator expectations. Frazier isn't doing dramatic voice transformations or giving each character a distinct accent. His approach is more subtle - tone shifts that help you track who's speaking without pulling you out of the story. And honestly? For a middle-grade audiobook that my kids might eventually listen to? That's exactly right. The comedic timing is solid. His delivery on the absurd spy situations lands the jokes without overselling them.
No fancy sound effects or musical interludes here - just clean, straightforward narration. Which means when Sophie inevitably screams from her crib mid-chapter, I can pause and resume without missing some crucial audio cue. Survived 47 pauses and still made sense.
The Mom Verdict (Because That's What You're Here For)
Is this groundbreaking literature? No. Is it a perfectly paced, genuinely funny spy adventure that I can share with my seven-year-old without worrying about content? Absolutely. The 'violence' is cartoon-level - more Home Alone than John Wick. The suspense exists but won't give anyone nightmares. And the language is clean enough that I won't have to explain any new vocabulary to Emma.
Compared to some of the other middle-grade series we've tried (looking at you, every book that thinks 'gross-out humor' is a personality), Gibbs actually writes sentences that flow. There's a rhythm to his prose that makes it easy listening even at 1.25x speed.
Who Should Listen (And Who Should Skip)
Perfect for multitasking moms who need something light but not brain-dead. Great for family road trips where you need content that works for both the kids and the adults stuck in the front seat. If you've got a reluctant reader in the 8-12 range, this series might be the gateway drug to getting them hooked on books.
Skip if you need complex plots or morally gray characters. This is comfort food, not a five-course meal. And I mean that as a compliment.

I'm adding the rest of this series to my library queue. Not because it's changing my life or making me think deep thoughts about the human condition.
