Where Lighthouses Heal What Battlefields Broke An Army doctor's quiet exhaustion meets small-town determination in this gentle Hope Harbor romance. Not the thriller I usually reach for, but after a brutal night shift, sometimes predictable comfort is exactly what the nurse ordered. Our verdict: Borrow or Stream.

Night Shift Mode 🌃

"Sometimes the things we inherit aren't what we expect." That line hit me around hour three, driving home after a particularly brutal night in the trauma bay. We'd lost a young guy - motorcycle accident, nothing we could do - and I was raw. The last thing I expected was a clean Christian romance about a lighthouse to make me pull over and just... sit there for a minute. Look, I'm not Irene Hannon's target demographic. I read thrillers where people get murdered in creative ways. But Carlos's mom keeps recommending these Hope Harbor books, and I figured I'd give one a shot. Night shift brain needs variety sometimes. ## When "Squeaky Clean" Is Actually the Point Some reviewers complain this story is too clean, too predictable. And yeah, okay, you're not going to be shocked by where Ben and Marci end up. But here's the thing - as someone who spends twelve hours watching people on the worst days of their lives, predictable isn't always a dirty word. Ben Garrison is an Army doctor coming off battlefield trauma. The book doesn't get graphic about it, but Hannon gets something right that a lot of authors miss: the way trauma doesn't announce itself. Ben's not having dramatic flashbacks every chapter. He's just... tired. Disconnected. Wanting to sell this lighthouse and move on with his life because caring about things feels like too much work. That quiet exhaustion? That I recognize. Marci's the local newspaper editor determined to save the Pelican Point lighthouse, and their initial conflict is pretty standard romance fare. She's pushy, he's resistant, sparks fly. The faith elements are woven throughout - characters pray, attend church, reference God's plan - so if that's not your thing, fair warning. But it never felt preachy to me. More like... these are just people who happen to be religious, living their lives. ## Thérèse Plummer Does the Heavy Lifting (Mostly) Plummer's narration is clear and energetic - easy to follow during that 3 AM charting when the unit's quiet and I'm trying to stay awake. Her delivery has this warmth that fits Hope Harbor's small-town vibe perfectly. She's genuinely easy to listen to, which sounds like faint praise but trust me, after ten hours with a bad narrator, you learn to appreciate "easy." Here's my issue though: the character voices start blending together after a while. Ben and the other male characters sound similar enough that I occasionally lost track of who was speaking. The women fare a bit better, but if you're listening to multiple Hope Harbor books back-to-back (which, apparently, people do), the sameness would get noticeable. For a single listen? Fine. For a series binge? Maybe space them out. ## The Slow Burn Actually Burns I'll be honest - the first couple hours are slow. Like, "I almost switched to my true crime podcast" slow. The setup takes its time establishing Hope Harbor, introducing the side characters, laying groundwork. If you're used to thrillers that open with a body on page one, this requires patience. But somewhere around hour four, I stopped checking how much time was left. The slow burn between Ben and Marci started working. The lighthouse renovation became weirdly compelling. And there's this subplot about a troubled teenager that Hannon handles with more nuance than I expected - no easy fixes, no miraculous turnarounds, just messy human progress. The medical details are minimal, so I didn't get to yell at my dashboard about incorrect procedures. (Small disappointments.) But the emotional healing arc for Ben felt authentic. Not rushed, not dramatic, just a guy slowly remembering how to care about things again. ## Who This Is For (And Who Should Skip) **Perfect for:** Readers who want romance without explicit content. Fans of small-town settings with community vibes. Anyone needing something gentle after consuming too much dark content. Carlos's mom. Probably your mom too. [Before We Were Yours](/reviews/before-we-were-yours-a-novel) gave me that same gentle-but-gutting feeling, though it leans heavier on the emotional devastation side. **Skip if:** You need fast pacing from the jump. You want significant heat in your romance. Religious themes aren't your thing. You're binging the series - space these out. ## Night Shift Prescription This isn't going to change your life. It's not going to make you ugly-cry (though I did get a little misty during the lighthouse dedication scene - blamed allergies when Carlos asked). What it is: nearly ten hours of gentle, competent storytelling that doesn't ask too much of you. Sometimes that's exactly what you need. After a shift where nothing went right, where you're driving home wondering why you do this job, a story about broken people finding hope in a small Oregon town hits different. My mom would love this. She still thinks I should've been a doctor, but at least she'd approve of my audiobook choices for once. Night shift approved - with the caveat that you might need to bump the speed to 1.25x during the slower opening chapters. The lighthouse will still be there when you arrive.
