Look, I'll be honest - I started this audiobook during Sophie's nap time and finished it sitting in my car in the garage at 10 PM because I could NOT stop. My husband texted asking if I was okay. I was. I was just... possessed by this book. Fitting, really.
This is the third book in Nora Roberts' Sign of Seven trilogy, and if you haven't read the first two, turn around. Go back. Do not pass go. This finale pulls together everything - the demon, the bloodstone, the three couples - and throws it all into the fire. Literally. There's a lot of fire.
The Slow Burn That Paid Off
Gage and Cybil's romance is the centerpiece here, and oh, it's delicious. He's a gambler with commitment issues (shocking for a romance hero, I know). She's brilliant and guarded. They both have the gift of seeing the future, which you'd think would make things easier, but - spoiler - it really doesn't. Their chemistry crackles, and Roberts does that thing she does so well where the romance feels earned, not rushed.
But here's the thing. This isn't just a romance. It's paranormal horror wrapped in a love story, and some scenes made me genuinely uncomfortable. We're talking violence, gore, dark imagery that had me checking my rearview mirror. If you're sensitive to that stuff, maybe skip this one. Or at least don't listen alone at night. (I did. Mistake.)
The pacing takes a minute to get going - the first hour or so is setup and relationship building. Which, fine, I get it. But when you're listening in 20-minute chunks between school runs and toddler tantrums, you want things to MOVE. Once it picks up though? It moves. The final confrontation had me white-knuckling my steering wheel.
Dan John Miller Behind the Mic
Okay, so Dan John Miller. He's solid. His emotional delivery is genuinely good - you can feel Gage's conflict, Cybil's frustration. And the production choices? The evocative music at chapter beginnings, the computer-altered demon voice? Chef's kiss. It adds this whole atmospheric layer that made me feel like I was listening to a movie.
That said, I've heard some Nora Roberts audiobooks that felt more polished. There were moments where the pacing felt slightly off, where I had to rewind because I zoned out during a dialogue-heavy section. Not terrible. Just... not his best work, maybe? The story itself carried me through, but the narration didn't always elevate it the way I wanted.
Compared to other paranormal romances I've listened to, this one sits solidly in the middle for narration quality. Bridge of Realms had similar atmospheric production choices that elevated the supernatural elements, though the romance there didn't quite land the same way. Better than some generic romance reads, not quite as dynamic as a full-cast production. But for a single narrator handling multiple characters, demons, and romance scenes? He does the job.
Who's This For (And Who Should Run)?
If you love Nora Roberts, this is peak Roberts. The blend of small-town charm, supernatural horror, and swoon-worthy romance hits all the notes. If you've been following the trilogy, this ending is satisfying. Not predictable exactly, but... right. You know? The kind of ending that makes you sigh and close your eyes for a second.
But if you're new to paranormal romance, maybe don't start here. Something like Freshman Fantasy might be a gentler entry point into the genre, though honestly it didn't grab me the way this one did. And if you're squeamish about violence or dark themes, this might not be your comfort read. I usually go for lighter stuff - rom-coms, cozy mysteries - and this pushed my limits a little. In a good way, mostly. But still.
At 11 hours, it's a commitment. I knocked it out in about a week and a half of dedicated car time and nap time listening. 1.25x speed worked perfectly - kept things moving without losing the emotional beats.
Worth the Lost Sleep
This book made me ugly-cry at school pickup. The ending got me. Worth it, though. Sometimes you need a book that makes you feel something, even if that something includes terror and the desperate urge to check all your locks before bed.
My car time approved. Highly.
