Her mother ships her off to what she thinks is a proper finishing school, except—surprise—it's actually a floating airship academy where young ladies learn to poison, spy, and dispose of bodies while maintaining impeccable manners. The whole premise had me cackling in the school pickup line. (The other moms definitely think I'm losing it. They're not entirely wrong.)
Gail Carriger has this bone-dry British humor that just WORKS. The jokes land even when you've paused forty-seven times because someone needs a snack, someone else can't find their shoe, and the baby has decided that nap time is actually screaming time. Her British accent is the real deal, which matters when you're listening to Victorian steampunk. Nothing pulls you out of a story faster than an American doing a bad British accent. (I'm looking at you, every audiobook I've abandoned in the past year.) The comedic timing is solid too—there's this dry delivery on the more absurd lines that had me snorting into my steering wheel.
I've heard some people prefer Emily Gray from the adult Parasol Protectorate series, and honestly? I haven't listened to those, so I can't compare. But Quirk made this feel like exactly what it should be: lighter, younger, and just a touch more playful.
