Look, I'm going to level with you. I should be working on my thesis. My advisor, Dr. Patel, thinks I'm deep in the weeds of "Algorithmic Complexity in Procedural Level Design." And technically... I am? Just not the way he thinks.

I spent the last 12 hours listening to a sentient rock build a murder maze. And it was glorious.

Dungeon Born is basically the novelization of what I wish my code could do. It's the start of the Divine Dungeon series, and if you've never dipped your toes into the murky, stat-heavy waters of LitRPG (Literature Role Playing Game), this is the deep end. But the water is fine. (Actually, the water is probably acidic slime, but you get the metaphor.)

When SimCity Meets Murder

Here's the hook: Cal is a Dungeon Core. He's a soul trapped in a stone. He can't move, he can't speak (at first), but he can manipulate his environment. He eats adventurers to gain mana. He builds traps. He spawns bunnies that will rip your throat out.

For a guy like me—who spent most of his childhood mapping out D&D dungeons on graph paper in the back of a library—this is pure dopamine. Watching Cal figure out the economics of killing is weirdly satisfying. He has to balance his "income" (dead adventurers) with his "expenses" (creating loot to lure them in). It's capitalism, but with more spikes.

If you're the type of person who hates "info-dumps" or detailed explanations of magic systems, run away. Seriously. Dakota Krout loves the mechanics. He gets into the nitty-gritty of cultivation—circulating mana, expanding soul spaces, the whole wuxia-inspired power grind. Personally? I live for this stuff. It's like reading a player's handbook that has a plot.

Vikas Adam Goes Full Send

LitRPG narration is a minefield. Sometimes you get a guy reading stat blocks like he's reciting a tax return. Not Vikas. This guy brings an energy that borders on manic—in the best way.

He gives Cal this inquisitive, slightly alien, but oddly charming voice. That same energy carried me through Wizard's First Rule, where the narrator had to juggle equally distinct character voices. For the human characters—like Dale, the sheep-herder turned adventurer—he leans into the teen drama vibes. Is it a little over the top sometimes? Yeah. There were moments where the dialogue felt a bit... let's say "Saturday Morning Cartoon."

But honestly? It works. The book doesn't take itself too seriously, and neither does Vikas. He sells the humor, even when the jokes are a bit cheesy. (And there are puns. So many puns. My dad would be proud.)

The "Crunch" Factor

I know some people complain that the human dialogue is clunky. And okay, fair point. Dale isn't exactly Hamlet. He's a grind-focused adventurer trying to get strong enough to survive. But I didn't come here for deep interpersonal drama. I came here to see a sentient rock outsmart a party of greed-fueled dungeon divers.

It's a progression fantasy. The joy is in the numbers going up. It's in seeing Cal unlock a new mob type or figure out a deadlier trap configuration. It scratches that same itch as playing Civilization or Factorio until 4 AM.

Roll for Initiative (Or Don't)

This one's for you if: You've ever min-maxed a D&D character, lost a weekend to base-building games, or genuinely enjoy reading about mana circulation systems. Bonus points if you've ever drawn a dungeon map for fun.

Skip it if: You need character-driven drama or can't stand detailed magic system explanations. The human dialogue won't win any awards, and if stat progression bores you, this isn't your dungeon.

So, no, I didn't write a single line of code for my thesis this week. But I did learn a lot about the theoretical mana efficiency of pit traps. And really, isn't that what grad school is all about?
