I'm serious. I picked this up on a Sunday afternoon while stress-testing a new monitoring dashboard at home (Kevin was out, the apartment was quiet, I had three terminals open and a cold brew). And within twenty minutes I'd forgotten about my grafana panels entirely because Roach was explaining how NASA engineers had to design a space toilet โ and I mean really design it, with a camera mounted inside the training toilet bowl so astronauts could practice their, uh, alignment. There's a target. You're supposed to hit the target. The whole section reads like the most absurd JIRA ticket ever filed, and Burr narrates it with this bone-dry delivery that absolutely lands.

Here's what makes Roach different from every pop-science writer cranking out "Space Is Cool" content: she chases the weird engineering problems. Not "how do rockets work" but "what happens when you vomit inside a sealed helmet during EVA" (answer: you tilt your head and hope it pools away from your nose, because there is no Plan B). Or: what does a year without walking do to your bones? She visits the labs. She talks to the researchers running bed-rest studies where volunteers lie at a 6-degree head-down tilt for weeks. She watches a cadaver get strapped into NASA's new Orion capsule for crash testing โ dead body standing in for living astronaut โ and reports back with this mix of genuine scientific curiosity and barely-contained glee at the absurdity.
The science actually holds up. Roach does her homework, and she's transparent about the parts that are speculative vs. well-established. She'll spend three pages on the biomechanics of space motion sickness (the vestibular system conflict theory, the role of the vagus nerve) and then casually mention that some researcher she interviewed keeps a collection of astronaut barf bags. The tonal whiplash is the whole point. She treats bodily functions with the same rigor she gives orbital mechanics, which โ honestly โ is the correct engineering approach.

Okay, the narrator situation. Sandra Burr is competent and clear, and she handles Roach's sarcasm well โ there's this section about Japanese astronaut selection where candidates are evaluated on their ability to fold paper cranes under stress, and Burr delivers the punchline with perfect deadpan. She also leans into the gross bits. There's a moment where she's vocalizing a gagging reaction that made the guy sitting next to me on the 6:47 give me a look because I snorted.
But โ and I noticed this more during early morning listens โ her delivery flattens out during the longer expository stretches. When Roach is building up to a good anecdote through a few pages of historical context, Burr sometimes settles into this cruise-control tone that made me drift. Not terrible, but at 6AM in a packed Caltrain car, I needed to bump to 1.5x for those sections to keep my attention locked. The comedic sections? Perfect at normal speed. The connective tissue between them? Could use more energy.
She's no Ray Porter. But she's a 3.5 out of 5 โ gets the job done, occasionally surprises you, doesn't ruin anything.
This Is Basically a Postmortem Report but for the Human Body in Space
I kept thinking about incident postmortems while listening to this. Roach's whole approach is: here's the failure mode (humans need gravity, air, dignity), here's how engineers tried to solve it (sometimes brilliantly, sometimes hilariously badly), here's what we learned. Each chapter is basically a root cause analysis of a different biological system failing in microgravity. As someone who spends her days debugging distributed systems, I found this deeply relatable. The human body is just a legacy system that wasn't designed for its current deployment environment.
The book does jump around โ each chapter is fairly self-contained, which is actually great for commute listening. I finished it in about 5 commutes (with some Sunday afternoon bonus time). You won't lose the thread if you zone out for a stop or two.

If you've read Stiff or Bonk, you know what you're getting. If you haven't, this is a solid entry point into Mary Roach's whole deal. The ROI on this audiobook is strong โ 10.5 hours of genuinely entertaining science that'll give you at least a dozen dinner party facts. (Kevin now knows way more about astronaut hygiene than he ever wanted to.)
Who should skip: anyone squeamish about bodily functions, or anyone who needs a strong narrative arc. This is episodic, not a building story. Also if you need high-energy narration to stay awake โ maybe grab the print version instead.
I finished this wanting to read everything Roach has written. That's pretty much the highest compliment I can give a nonfiction audiobook. The last time I felt this way about a nonfiction writer was reading Being Mortal โ Atul Gawande has the same gift for treating deeply uncomfortable biological realities with rigor and genuine humanity, and it earned a similar 4.5 from me.
