Mom of 3. Audiobook time is 45min hiding in car. No shame.

🎧 Catches audiobooks between school runs, loves escapist superhero action, can't survive overly complex plots.

Ever look at your kids and wish they had actual superpowers instead of just the supernatural ability to create a sticky mess in a room they haven't even entered yet?

I picked up Michael Vey 4 hoping for some escapist superhero action to drown out the Bluey theme song playing on a loop in my brain. And honestly? It mostly worked. This is the fourth book, so we're deep in the weeds with Michael and the "Electroclan" (still love that name, still sounds like a band I would've listened to in 2004). This time they're heading to Taiwan to rescue a girl named Jade Dragon who is supposedly smarter than Einstein.

(Side note: My 5-year-old, Lucas, thinks he's smarter than Einstein because he figured out how to unlock the iPad. The bar is low in my house.)

The Voice in the Minivan

Let's address the elephant in the roomβ€”or the voice in the speakers. Keith Nobbs is narrating, and look, the internet has feelings about this guy. I saw a bunch of reviews complaining about his "strange pauses" mid-sentence. And yeah, I heard them. It's like he's... stopping... for dramatic effect... in weird places.

But here's my hack: I listen at 1.25x speed. Always. I'm a mom; I don't have time for slow talkers. At that speed? The pauses basically disappear. He actually sounds super intense and dramatic, which fits the whole "teenagers saving the world from evil corporate overlords" vibe perfectly. If you're a purist listening at 1.0x, you might twitch a little. Just crank the speed up. Problem solved.

Why It Works for Carpool

The story moves fast. We're not sitting around discussing feelings for three hours; we're breaking into plants in Taiwan and dodging bad guys. It's that classic "kids vs. evil adults" trope that I honestly live for because it's uncomplicated. Little Men has that same straightforward charmβ€”no convoluted plot twists, just good kids navigating their world. I don't need a character wiki to keep track of who is betraying whom.

It's clean enough that I didn't panic when Emma (my 7-year-old) overheard a bit of the action from the backseat. She asked if she could be electric. I told her only if she uses her powers to vacuum the stairs.

The "Is It Worth It?" Check

Is this high literature? No. But sometimes you don't need that. You need something that keeps you awake while you're waiting in the pickup line for 25 minutes. Richard Paul Evans knows how to write a cliffhanger that makes you sit in the garage for an extra five minutes just to see what happens next.

(Don't judge me. The garage is the only quiet place I own.)

If you're already invested in the series, you're gonna listen anyway. If you're new, start at book one, obviously. But for book four? It holds up. Just remember the speed hack.

Who's This For (And Who Should Bail)

Perfect for parents who need kid-friendly action that won't make you cringe if little ears catch a scene. Skip it if you need deep character development or can't handle listening at 1.25xβ€”those pauses will drive you up a wall at normal speed.
