Ever wonder what happens when a level 1 sorcerer tries to cast a 9th-level spell with absolutely zero proficiency? You get Dylan Apel, a witch who is basically a walking critical fail on a Wild Magic surge table.

I picked this up because my brain was literally melting from staring at procedural generation algorithms for my thesis. I needed a break from the 40-hour epic fantasies I usually mainline. I was sitting on my floor, reorganizing my D&D dice collection by "perceived luckiness" (the translucent green ones are cursed, obviously), and just let this run.

Honest talk: This is a cozy mystery. It's not *Malazan*. There are no Bridgeburners here, and the magic system isn't hard-coded with Sanderson-style laws of physics. But the chaos—accidentally summoning a swarm of mosquitoes, blowing up the power grid—is genuinely funny. Dylan is 100% a Wild Magic Sorcerer who dumped her Wisdom stat to max out Charisma. The plot kicks off at a witch convention where a gossip columnist drops dead after eating Dylan's dessert. Classic setup, sure, but it moves fast enough that you don't have time to roll your eyes.

Angela Dawe Understands the Assignment

Narrator Angela Dawe is doing some heavy lifting here. She's not going for the grimdark, gravelly voice I usually look for in my fantasy audiobooks. Dawe pulled off something similarly impressive in Savor the Moment, where she had to carry a much quieter emotional register without any of this chaos to lean on. Instead, she leans hard into the Southern accent—but it's the *sarcastic* kind. You know the tone. The one that sounds polite on the surface but is actually a verbal dagger?

She captures Dylan's internal monologue (mostly a mix of panic, snark, and "oh god why") without making her sound shrill. That's a surprisingly fine line to walk. When Dylan is bickering with Roman Bane—the obligatory hot investigator/Lawful Good Paladin to her Chaotic Good mess—Dawe gives Roman this exasperated, gravelly tone that plays really well against Dylan's frantic energy.

The "Short Rest" of Audiobooks

This thing clocks in at under seven hours. For a guy used to books that require a monthly subscription to finish, that's barely a warm-up. But honestly? It works. It's a palate cleanser. The mystery doesn't require a spreadsheet to track, and the stakes are personal rather than "the dark lord is eating the sun."

Roll for Initiative (Or Don't)

If you want deep, complex world-building, go read *The Way of Kings* again. But if you need something fun to listen to while you paint minis or ignore your thesis advisor's emails about your graduation timeline, this is a solid pick. Skip it if you need your magic systems crunchy and your mysteries grim—Dylan's chaotic energy will drive you up the wall.
