Witching Hour 🌙

Damon Torrance is basically a horror movie villain who wandered into the wrong genre.

I don't usually step out of the horror section—my brand is ghosts, not grand gestures—but when a character's stated ambition is to be a "nightmare," I'm listening. Kill Switch isn't a ghost story, but the dread? Absolutely there. This is psychological warfare masquerading as a love story, and honestly, I was kind of living for the chaos.

York Commits to the Creep Factor

Jeremy York understands the assignment. (That's rare.) He has to play a guy who is objectively terrible for a solid chunk of this book. He doesn't try to soften Damon or make him sound like a misunderstood puppy. He leans into the menace with this gravelly, unhinged tone that actually made me check the locks on my apartment door.

His work in Nightfall has that same midnight-prowl quality, like the microphone is hiding evidence.

If the narrator had tried to play it safe, this whole thing would've collapsed. But York commits. On the flip side, Tatiana Sokolov holds her own as Winter. She sounds terrified but not weak—a hard line to walk in audio. The dual POV is essential here because if I had to listen to just one side of this train wreck for nearly 18 hours, I would've lost my mind. The chemistry between the narrators? Palpable. Even Shirley (my cat) stopped grooming herself to stare at the speaker during the intense scenes.

A Marathon of Misery (In a Good Way)

Okay, we need to talk about the runtime. 17 hours and 37 minutes. That is a commitment. I could have listened to The Haunting of Hill House twice in that time.

I started this while reorganizing the graphic novel section at the library, thinking I'd bail after an hour. I didn't. Penelope Douglas writes with this frantic, claustrophobic pacing that keeps you from hitting pause even when you probably should. It's messy. It's toxic. (Don't email me about "healthy relationship dynamics"—we aren't here for that. We're here for the drama.)

There were moments where I genuinely felt sick for Winter—like, gut-churning dread. That's usually a feeling I reserve for King or Jackson. The fact that a romance novel pulled that reaction out of me? Respect. It drags a little in the middle—most books over 15 hours do—but the psychological twists kept me hooked.

Who Gets the Nightmare They Deserve

This isn't for everyone. If you want sweet and fluffy, go buy a Hallmark movie. If you get triggered by... well, everything, skip this. But if you like your romance with a side of adrenaline and maybe a restraining order? You're in the right place.

It's dark, it's twisted, and the narration elevates it from "trashy thriller" to "compelling character study." I listened in the dark. Mistake? Maybe. But Damon Torrance is scary enough to belong on my shelf.
