Dutch House: A Novel had a similar issue—beautiful writing, but sometimes you need a minute to breathe. Sometimes the rush works. Sometimes you're just trying to keep up.
The Voice Situation—Let's Talk About It
Jeremy York handles Orlando with the kind of swagger you'd expect from European royalty who knows he's too pretty for consequences. It works. Stephanie Wyles as Stella... look, I've heard worse. But there's a stiffness there that some listeners found robotic, and I can't entirely disagree. During the emotional peaks, when Stella should be falling apart or fighting back, the delivery sometimes felt like she was reading a patient discharge summary instead of living through it.
Carlos asked why I was making faces at my phone during breakfast. I told him the narrator was giving me "new grad nurse reading from a script" vibes. He nodded like he understood. (He did not understand.)
But here's the flip side—York really does carry a lot of this book. When Orlando's being charming and terrible and irresistible all at once, you get it. The mature content is definitely present—this isn't a fade-to-black situation. If you're listening in your car like me, maybe don't have the windows down at red lights.
This one's for you if: you want royal drama with actual heat, you don't mind flawed characters making questionable decisions, and you've got a soft spot for "bad reputation meets single parent" stories. Skip it if: inconsistent female narration is a dealbreaker, or you need your romance leads to be responsible adults from page one.
I will say—and this is where my night shift brain might be too cynical—both main characters spend a good chunk of the book being kind of selfish. Not in a fun way, in a "you are grown adults with responsibilities, act like it" way. Stella's got a daughter. Orlando's got a reputation. And sometimes their decisions made me want to yell at my dashboard for entirely different reasons than usual.
But you know what? Sometimes that's realistic. People are messy. Royal people are messy with better wardrobes. And by the end, they figure it out. The surprise baby becomes less of a plot device and more of a catalyst for actual growth.

This is a solid beach read in audio form. Not Halle's best work—A Nordic King still holds that crown in this series—but entertaining enough for what it is. The pacing issues are real, the female narration is hit-or-miss, but the chemistry between the leads carries a lot of weight.
Would I recommend it? Yeah, but maybe wait for a sale or use your streaming subscription. It's good, not great. The kind of book that keeps you company at 3 AM when the unit's quiet and you need something that isn't life or death for once.
