Mom of 3. Audiobook time is 45min hiding in car. No shame.

🎧 Catches audiobooks hiding in garage, loves real talk about messy motherhood, can't survive toxic positivity bullshit.

You know how sometimes you just need someone to tell you that you're doing fine? Not in that toxic positivity way where they're clearly lying, but in that "girl, I also found a chicken nugget in my bra yesterday" kind of way?

That's this book. That's the whole vibe.

Like Hanging Out With Your Funniest Mom Friends

I listened to this during my sacred car-garage-hiding time, and I'm not exaggerating when I say I laughed so hard I snorted. Multiple times. Thank God the windows were up because my neighbors already think I'm unhinged.

Kristin and Jen narrate their own book, which - look, sometimes that's a disaster. Authors aren't always good narrators. But these two? They're comedians. They know timing. They know delivery. And more importantly, they sound like they're actually having fun recording this together. You can hear their friendship, and it makes the whole thing feel less like a book and more like you're third-wheeling on the world's best wine night.

That said - and I'm being honest here - some parts do feel a little flat. Like maybe they were tired that recording day, or the energy dipped. It's not constant, but there are moments where the pacing gets weird. I didn't mind because the content itself carried me through, but if you're someone who needs perfectly polished narration, maybe sample first.

The Stuff Nobody Else Will Say Out Loud

Here's what I appreciated most: they talk about the real stuff. Not just the "haha, kids are messy" content (though there's plenty of that). They get into postpartum depression. The dark thoughts that creep in at 2 AM when you haven't slept in three days. The way mom guilt can eat you alive.

And they do it without being preachy or sad-sack about it. It's more like "hey, this happened to me, it sucked, you're not alone, also here's a story about nipple hair." The whiplash between heavy and hilarious actually mirrors how real motherhood feels. That same kind of emotional honestyβ€”minus the mom chaosβ€”is what I loved about Networking for People, which gets real about feeling overwhelmed without sugarcoating it. You're crying in the bathroom one minute and laughing at something ridiculous your kid said the next.

If you're not a mom, or if your kids are grown and you've blocked out the chaos years, some of this might not land the same way. This is very specifically for people in the trenches. The "why is there yogurt on the ceiling" trenches. The "I haven't had a hot meal in four years" trenches.

How Does This Stack Up?

I've listened to a lot of mom-humor books. Some try too hard to be relatable and end up feeling fake. Others are so polished they lose the authenticity. This one hits different because Kristin and Jen aren't performing motherhood - they're just... in it. With you. Covered in the same mystery stains.

Compared to other comedian memoirs I've done, this is lighter. It's not trying to be profound or life-changing. It knows exactly what it is: a seven-hour break from feeling like you're the only one failing at this whole parenting thing. Sometimes that's exactly what you need.

The friendship angle really sets it apart too. So much mom content is about the kids, but this book is really about female friendship. About having that one person (or if you're lucky, a few people) who will text you back at midnight when you're spiraling about whether you're ruining your children. That's the heart of it.

Who's This For (And Who Should Skip)

Perfect for moms currently in the trenches who need something that doesn't require a single brain cell but still feels like actual entertainment. Skip it if you're not a parent or prefer your humor with more polishβ€”this is messy on purpose.

Garage-Hiding Approved

I finished this in about a week - mostly during nap time and my post-school-drop-off decompression drives. It survived being paused approximately 847 times (Sophie is going through a phase, don't ask) and I never lost the thread. High praise from me.

Is it groundbreaking literature? No. Will it change your life? Probably not. But will it make you feel seen and also make you laugh until your stomach hurts? Yeah. It really will.
