But let me back up. John Charming is an ex-Knight Templar who's also a werewolf, which means he's basically the only guy who can infiltrate this mysterious wolf army situation happening in Wisconsin. (Wisconsin! Of all places. Though honestly, after surviving three winters in the Midwest with small children, I believe anything could be lurking there.)

Roger Wayne's narration is the reason this book survived being paused 47 times. And I'm not exaggerating. Between Lucas needing help with his shoes, Sophie deciding nap time was actually scream-at-the-ceiling time, and Emma's Very Important Question about whether mermaids can get sunburned—this audiobook got interrupted constantly. But here's the thing: Wayne's delivery is so natural, so conversational, that I never felt lost when I came back.
There's this thing he does where he'll actually slur John's words when the character gets beat up, which sounds like a small detail but it's not. It's the kind of choice that makes you feel like you're inside John's head instead of just listening to someone read words at you. The sarcasm comes through perfectly too. John Charming has this dry, self-deprecating humor that reminded me of my own internal monologue when I'm watching my kids do something ridiculous. (Like yesterday when Lucas tried to "help" by putting the cat in the dishwasher. He's fine. The cat, I mean. Lucas got a time out.)
When the Wolf Stuff Gets Real
I'll be honest—I don't usually go for supernatural violence. My reading comfort zone is more "will they get together at the Christmas market" than "will he survive the werewolf army." But Elliott James writes action in a way that's actually followable, even when you're also trying to remember if you signed the permission slip for Emma's field trip.
The pacing matches what I need: fast enough to keep me engaged during the 25-minute school drop-off, but not so breakneck that I miss crucial plot points while mentally calculating whether we have enough chicken nuggets for dinner. There are slower moments too, character stuff that gives you breathing room. The whole "is this new wolf leader a madman or a messiah" question actually made me think, which is more than I can say for most of what I consume between wiping noses and negotiating bedtimes.
The romance elements are there but not overwhelming. It's not a romance book pretending to be fantasy—it's fantasy with romantic tension woven in. Perfect for when you want a little spice but also need the plot to actually go somewhere.

At nine and a half hours, this isn't a quick listen. But it's not a 40-hour commitment either. I finished it in about a week and a half, which for me is basically speed-reading. The chapters are reasonable lengths, which matters when your listening windows are unpredictable.
The production quality is clean—no weird audio glitches or background noise that makes you wonder if your phone is dying. Small thing, but when you're listening at 1.25x in a minivan full of Cheerio crumbs and old juice boxes, you notice when audio quality is off.
