A romance protagonist who's self-aware about NOT being the small-town sunshine girl? At 2AM with my LED strips on purple and my ring light still warm from filming, I was already locked in.
Okay so quick disclaimer: this is the Italian audiobook narrated by Valentina Framarin, not the English Julia Whelan version that's been all over my FYP. And honestly? That changes things.
Nora Stephens Is the Main Character Energy We Deserved
Emily Henry did something sneaky with this book. She took every small-town romance trope — the big-city career woman forced into a quaint little town, the grumpy love interest, the meddling sister — and then made her protagonist someone who's actually READ those tropes. Nora is a literary agent. She KNOWS she's in a rom-com setup. She's annoyed about it. And that meta-awareness is what makes the banter between her and Charlie Lastra hit different than your standard enemies-to-lovers.
Charlie is basically what would happen if a red pen became a person. He's an editor who hates unnecessary adjectives (the irony of him being in an Emily Henry book is not lost on me), and the way their professional rivalry bleeds into their personal tension — specifically that scene where they're arguing about a manuscript revision and you realize they're actually flirting? The tension is chef's kiss. My algorithm has been feeding me Emily Henry content for months and I finally get why. That slow-burn heat between two people who can't stop being smart at each other also had me spiraling through Never Never: Part Three at an embarrassing hour of the night.
The sister dynamic between Nora and Libby carries way more emotional weight than I expected. Nora's whole identity is built around protecting Libby after their mom died, and watching her slowly realize she's been using that protectiveness as a shield against her own life? That hit me in the gym between sets and I had to just... sit on the bench for a minute.
Valentina Framarin vs. the Julia Whelan Standard
So here's where it gets complicated. If you've listened to the English version, Julia Whelan's performance is basically legendary BookTok canon at this point. Valentina Framarin's Italian narration is solid — she keeps Nora's sharp, cynical energy intact and her Charlie voice has this dry, clipped quality that works for his whole brooding editor thing. But I'll be real: the Italian translation sometimes smooths out Emily Henry's very specific, very American humor. Some of the pop culture references and the rhythm of the banter lose a little punch in translation. It's not Framarin's fault — she's working with what the translation gives her.
Where Framarin does shine is the emotional scenes. The conversation Nora has with Libby about their childhood, where all the resentment and love get tangled together — Framarin's voice actually cracks in a way that felt unscripted, and that's the kind of narration choice that earns my respect. She's not just reading, she's reacting.
The pacing of the audio felt slightly slower than the English version though. At nearly 13 hours, bump to 2.0x immediately. The Sunshine Falls setting descriptions are cute but they drag in audio format — I don't need three paragraphs about a bookshop's window display when I'm trying to get to the next Nora-Charlie confrontation.
The Spice Report (Because Y'all Are Gonna Ask)
Spice level: respectable but not illegal. Emily Henry writes tension better than she writes the actual payoff scenes, and that's consistent across her books. The slow burn between Nora and Charlie is genuinely electric — there's a moment where their hands touch over a stack of manuscripts and I felt that in my CHEST — but when they finally get together, it's more fade-to-warm than fade-to-scorching. If you're coming from Icebreaker or A Not So Meet Cute expecting that level of heat, recalibrate. The spice here is organic to who these characters are: two people who intellectualize everything, including attraction. Lady Awakened scratches a similar itch if you want that slow-build where the characters are clearly obsessed with each other before they'll admit it to themselves.
Who Gets the Aux and Who Gets Skipped
If you're an Emily Henry completist who wants to experience her work in Italian, or if you're learning Italian and want something fun to practice with, this version works. But if this is your FIRST time with Book Lovers? I'd honestly point you to the English audiobook first. The humor lands better in its original language, and Whelan's performance has become part of the book's identity for a reason. Skip this version if you need high spice or if slow-paced small-town settings make you reach for the skip button.
POV: you're obsessed with enemies-to-lovers where both characters are actually smart and the banter has real bite. That's this book. The Italian narration is a perfectly good way to experience it — just know you're getting a slightly different flavor of the same excellent dish.
BookTok made me buy this. No regrets. Even in Italian at 2AM.
