When His Voice Outages His Character's Age

  • โ€ขEasy on Tired Ears?: Andi Arndt is perfectly cast; Sebastian York is enjoyable but sounds noticeably older than his 24-year-old character, which creates occasional disconnect.
  • โ€ขSpice/Tropes: Classic enemies-to-lovers with strong steamy scenes that both narrators deliver with genuine chemistry - roll your windows up for these.
  • โ€ขNap-Time Friendly?: Slow, slightly stilted opening chapters give way to a much stronger middle and a predictable but satisfying finish.
  • โ€ขCar Time Approved?: Borrow/Stream

Is this for you?

โœ…Pick this if: you want steamy enemies-to-lovers romance without any emotional heavy lifting ยท you like York and Arndt and don't mind a hero sounding older than written ยท you need easy car-time listening that survives interruptions and ends satisfyingly
โŒSkip if: you abandon books with slow formulaic openings and stilted early dialogue ยท you need a twenty-four-year-old hero who actually sounds young ยท you prefer polished later March writing over her earlier less refined work

Is there anything more dangerous than an audiobook with Sebastian York's voice when you're trying to stay focused on driving a minivan full of booster seats?

I started Bad Judgment during Monday morning drop-off and finished it Friday afternoon sitting in the school pickup line with five minutes to spare before the bell. A full week of listening windows, and honestly? It hit the sweet spot of exactly what I needed - not life-changing literature, but a satisfying enemies-to-lovers romance that kept me company through a week where Sophie decided 2 AM was a great time to practice counting.

The "He's 24 But Sounds 34" Problem

Let's talk about the elephant in the audiobook. Sebastian York narrates Ryker's chapters, and his voice is - look, the man has a gorgeous voice. Deep, confident, a little gravelly. The problem is Ryker is supposed to be 24 or 25 years old, and York sounds like a man who has a whiskey collection and a retirement portfolio. There's a disconnect. When Ryker's doing something immature (and he does plenty of immature things), you're hearing it in a voice that belongs to someone who should absolutely know better. It's not a dealbreaker, but it pulled me out a few times.

Andi Arndt, on the other hand, is pitch-perfect as Justine. Clear, bright, a little sharp when the character needs to be sharp. She nails the self-righteous lawyer energy without making Justine unlikeable. The chemistry between the two narrators during their banter scenes is genuinely fun - you can feel the push-pull dynamic through the audio alone. When they're sparring, it works. When things get steamy, it really works. (I may have been glad my windows were up in the school parking lot for a couple of those scenes.)

Slow Start, Hot Middle, Predictable But Satisfying Finish

I'm going to be honest: the first couple of chapters had me wondering if I'd made a mistake. The setup feels a little formulaic - arrogant guy pursues reluctant woman, she resists, we all know where this is going. And some of the early dialogue is a bit stilted, like the chapter endings just... stop. Not cliffhangers, just abrupt pauses that feel like someone forgot to write a transition.

But somewhere around the two-hour mark, it clicks. Once Justine and Ryker actually start interacting beyond surface-level antagonism, the emotional stakes get real. There's backstory and secrets that add weight to what could've been a purely physical attraction, and Meghan March does a decent job layering in the reasons these two are so guarded. The steamy scenes are well-written and well-performed - that's where York and Arndt really earn their paychecks.

The ending is exactly where you think it's going to go, and you know what? Good. I don't need a plot twist at 3 PM on a Wednesday when I'm folding tiny socks. Sometimes predictable is the point. Satisfying ending - exactly what I needed.

The "Is This Her Best Work?" Question

So here's the thing - this is earlier Meghan March, and you can tell. If you've read her later stuff (the Mount trilogy, the Forge trilogy), the writing here is noticeably less polished. Some dialogue feels a little young-adult-ish for characters who are supposed to be adults. Ryker in particular comes across as immature in ways that I think are intentional but don't always land. There are moments where you want to shake him and say "you are a grown man, act like one," and not in the fun romance-hero way.

But at under 8 hours, it doesn't overstay its welcome. Survived 47 pauses and still made sense - I picked it back up after Sophie's nap interruptions, after Lucas needed help finding a shoe that was ON HIS FOOT, after the dog got into the recycling. Every time I came back, I knew exactly where I was and what was happening. That's worth something.

Who Gets to Listen and Who Should Keep Scrolling

If you're a romance audiobook fan who already likes York and Arndt, this is a reliable listen. Not their best work together, but solid. If you're new to Meghan March, I'd probably point you to her later books first and come back to this one. If you need something to fill a week of drop-offs and car time without requiring any emotional heavy lifting, this is your book.

Skip it if: slow starts make you abandon ship, or if a 24-year-old hero sounding like he's in his mid-thirties is going to bug you for seven straight hours.

Not groundbreaking, but sometimes you don't need groundbreaking. Sometimes you need a hot enemies-to-lovers romance that ends well, performed by two narrators who clearly enjoy the material. Car time approved. When I want something with more emotional weight to carry me through a longer stretch of car time, Detransition, Baby is the one I keep thinking about - same satisfying character chemistry, but with a lot more to sit with after the kids pile back in.
