So I'm sitting at my desk at 2 AM, supposedly finishing a logo for a client who needed it yesterday, and instead I'm listening to Con Leche growl about how he doesn't deserve this woman while I ugly-cry into my third cup of chamomile tea. Frida is judging me from the bookshelf. Diego knocked my stylus off the desk an hour ago and I didn't even notice because I was too busy feeling things.

This is what Meghan March does to me. Every. Single. Time.

The Voice That Made Me Stop Working

Okay, let's talk about Sebastian York and Andi Arndt because honestly? Dream team doesn't even cover it. Sebastian does this thing where Con sounds all rough and guarded but there's this vulnerability underneath that just—my heart. MY HEART. He's got this slight New Orleans drawl going on that, look, I've never been to NOLA so I can't tell you if it's perfectly authentic. Some listeners apparently had opinions about that. But for me? It worked. It added this layer of place and personality that made Con feel real.

Andi Arndt as Vanessa though. She nails the whole "classy Nola debutante" energy while also making her sound intelligent and warm and not at all like a stereotype. There's this quality to her voice that's like—okay this is going to sound weird—but it's like listening to your coolest older cousin give you life advice. You trust her immediately.

The chemistry between these two narrators is what elevates this from "good romance audiobook" to "I'm ignoring my deadlines" territory. When they're in scenes together (even though they recorded separately, obviously), you can feel the tension. The push and pull. The "I want you but I shouldn't" energy that makes second chance romance so delicious.

That Slow Burn That Paid Off

Here's the thing about this book—it's not just about the spicy scenes (though yes, there are spicy scenes, and yes, they're good). It's about watching two people who clearly belong together figure out how to get past their own damage. Con with his ink and his reputation and his conviction that he's not good enough for someone like Vanessa. Vanessa with her family expectations and her own secrets.

The pacing is pretty much perfect for audiobook listening. I designed three different concepts, made dinner, and cleaned my entire kitchen while listening, and I never felt like I needed to skip ahead or slow down. The 7 and a half hours flew by. Like, genuinely flew. I kept checking how much time was left and being surprised.

Meghan March does this thing where she weaves in mystery and intrigue alongside the romance, so you're not just waiting for the couple to get together—you're also trying to figure out what's going on beneath the surface. She pulls off that same layered storytelling in Ruthless King, though with higher stakes and more danger. It kept my brain engaged even during the slower character development moments.

Would Abuela Have Approved?

Okay so. Real talk. This book has steam. Like, significant steam. Abuela would have clutched her rosary AND kept listening while pretending to be scandalized. (She was like that. I miss her so much.)

But underneath all the heat, there's this really sweet story about seeing someone for who they really are, not who the world thinks they are. About second chances and not letting fear keep you from the person you're supposed to be with. That's the stuff that got me crying at 2 AM.

The vibes are immaculate. This is a rainy Sunday book, or a "I need to escape my own life for a while" book, or a "designing at midnight with my cats" book. It's comfort food for your ears.

Your Vibe Check

If you love alpha male heroes who are secretly soft for the right person—this is your book. If you're into second chance romance where there's actual tension and stakes—yes. If you appreciate dual narration that makes you feel like you're getting the full story from both sides—absolutely.

Maybe skip if you're really particular about regional accents being 100% authentic. Or if you're not in the mood for something emotionally intense.

The production is clean, the narration is stellar, and the story hit me right in the feelings. Andi and Sebastian really are a dream team, and I'm already adding the rest of this series to my library. Beneath These Shadows is next on my list—same narrators, same series, and apparently even more emotional damage.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a logo to finish and a cat to apologize to.
