  • β€’Educational Value: Structured as a daily devotional with prayers and challenges, genuinely functional if you commit to the 40-day format.

  • β€’Class Theme: Feels like a gentle Bible study led by a friend who cares about you β€” encouraging but repetitive in its emotional register.
  • β€’Final Grade: Borrow/Stream

I was sitting in the back row of a professional development workshop last Thursday β€” something about 'leveraging digital platforms for student engagement' β€” and I caught myself doing the exact thing this book diagnoses. Phone under the table, scrolling Instagram, half-listening to a presenter talk about how technology connects us. The irony was so thick you could spread it on toast. So when I got home and queued up Wendy Speake's 40-Day Social Media Fast, I figured the universe was trying to tell me something.

Here's the thing. I teach Thoreau. I've stood in front of juniors and read them the line about living deliberately and sucking the marrow out of life, and then I go home and spend forty minutes watching strangers argue about whether a dress is blue or gold. So yeah, the premise hit close.

The Book Thoreau Would've Written If He Had a Facebook Account

Speake structures this as a devotional β€” forty days, forty chapters, each one designed to peel back a layer of why we reach for our phones the way some people reach for a cigarette. And she's not subtle about the framework: this is a spiritual fast, modeled directly on her earlier 40-Day Sugar Fast. The conceit is that social media is a counterfeit comfort, a substitute for the connection we're actually hungry for, which she frames as connection with God.

Now, I need to be straight with you. If you're picking this up expecting a secular analysis of dopamine loops and attention economies β€” the Cal Newport approach β€” you're going to be disappointed fast. This is a Bible study with a social media hook, not a social media book with spiritual seasoning. Every chapter loops back to Scripture. Every reflection ends with prayer. Speake isn't hiding the ball here; the subtitle literally says "Real-Life Devotion." But I've seen enough reviews from frustrated listeners who wanted something else that it bears repeating.

What Speake does well is name the specific spiritual cost of scrolling. She's not just saying "phones bad." She's making a more pointed argument: that the validation cycle of likes and comments becomes a replacement for seeking approval from God. That comparison culture on Instagram is a modern-day envy problem dressed up in Valencia filters. That's not groundbreaking social commentary, but hearing it framed in devotional language gives it a different weight β€” at least for the audience this is meant for.

Wendy Speake Reading Wendy Speake

Speake narrates her own book, and you can tell she's a trained performer. Her background in acting (she had guest spots on JAG and Star Trek: Voyager, which β€” I did not see that coming for a Bible teacher) shows up in her pacing and her comfort behind the microphone. She reads her own stories about her kids, her own struggles with phone addiction, and her own prayer life with the kind of warmth that only an author can bring to autobiographical material. There's no disconnect between writer and reader here because they're the same person.

That said, the delivery is consistent to a fault. Every chapter has the same emotional arc β€” personal confession, biblical reference, gentle exhortation β€” and Speake reads them all in roughly the same register. Warm. Sincere. Steady. After about two hours, I started craving some tonal variety. A flash of frustration. A moment of doubt that didn't resolve so neatly. The narration is heartfelt, but it stays in one lane.

At six hours, the length is right for a devotional. You could genuinely listen to one chapter a day for forty days, maybe eight or nine minutes each, and it would function exactly as designed. I actually think that's the better way to experience it rather than what I did, which was listen to about half of it during one late-night grading session and the rest on a Saturday morning walk with Denise. (She asked what I was listening to. I told her. She said, "So you're fasting from social media by listening to a book about fasting from social media instead of actually fasting from social media?" Denise keeps me honest.)

Who This Is For β€” And Who It Really Isn't

This is for Christian women β€” and I say women specifically because the examples, the tone, and the community Speake builds around her fasts skew heavily female β€” who know their phone habits are crowding out their spiritual life and want structured accountability. If that's you, this is genuinely useful. The daily format works. The prayers are specific. The challenges are doable.

If you're not a person of faith, or if you're looking for research-backed analysis of screen addiction, this isn't your book. And that's fine. Not every book needs to be for every reader. But I wish Speake had spent a bit more time in the practical weeds β€” the actual mechanics of breaking phone habits, the psychological triggers, the replacement behaviors that aren't exclusively prayer-based. The spiritual framework is sturdy, but the practical toolkit is thin.

This reminds me of what Hemingway said about prose β€” the dignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one-eighth of it being above water. I kept thinking about how Becoming Mrs. Lewis manages to do both β€” the spiritual and the searingly human β€” without letting either crowd the other out. Speake gives you the visible eighth. The devotional surface is polished and sincere. But I kept wanting more beneath it.

The Red Pen Says

I'm giving this a qualified recommendation. For its intended audience, it's a solid devotional companion β€” warm, structured, and genuinely convicted about the problem it's addressing. For everyone else, it's a pass. The narration is competent if a bit monotone over six hours, and the author-as-narrator authenticity counts for something. But the book stays so firmly in its spiritual lane that it misses the chance to be something broader and more lasting.

My students would probably benefit from a social media fast. They'd hate this version of it. But then again, they hate most things I recommend. That's never stopped me before.
