When a book captures that messiness authentically, I cry. When it's sanitized for straight readers, I rage. I analyze characters like I analyze my clients - what trauma is really driving them? What coping mechanisms are healthy vs destructive? I listen at 1.25x because I need to catch every emotional beat. Chosen family isn't a trope - it's survival. If an author doesn't understand this, they shouldn't be writing queer stories.
