Mom of 3. Audiobook time is 45min hiding in car. No shame.

๐ŸŽง Catches audiobooks in garage before chaos, loves flawed women figuring life out, can't survive books requiring character wikis.

I was sitting in my car in the garage - you know, my sacred 45 minutes of silence before going inside to whatever chaos awaits - when I started this one. And honestly? It was exactly what I needed after a day of refereeing sibling fights and cleaning marker off the walls. Again.

Della Sloane can't pump her own gas. I know, I know. But here's the thing - her sheltered past makes it make sense, and watching her figure out the world on her own terms hit differently than I expected. She's escaping something dark (her mom's mental illness, the way it consumed their lives), and she's doing it alone with zero life skills. As someone who sometimes feels like I'm barely holding it together despite being a functional adult, there's something weirdly relatable about a woman just trying to figure out how to exist.

Woods Is The Good Kind of Problematic

So Woods Kerrington is your classic rich boy with family expectations crushing him. His family wants him with a woman in pearls. He wants the girl in cutoffs. It's not groundbreaking, but sometimes you don't need groundbreaking - you need a beach town romance with a hero who's obsessed in that way that would be concerning in real life but is chef's kiss in fiction.

The dual timeline thing works here. They have a one-night stand, she leaves, months pass, and he cannot get her out of his head. When she comes back to Rosemary Beach, it's all tension and "we shouldn't do this" energy. Which, let's be honest, is exactly why we're here.

I finished most of this during nap time. High praise.

Sebastian York Could Read a Grocery List

Look. I need to talk about Sebastian York's voice. Because when other reviewers say it's one of the sexiest they've heard? They're not wrong. His sections - Woods's POV - have this low, slightly rough quality that made me forget I was listening in a Honda Odyssey surrounded by goldfish cracker crumbs.

Elizabeth Louise handles Della with real vulnerability. She's not just reading - she's acting. You can hear the anxiety in Della's voice when her past creeps up, and the tentative hope when things with Woods start feeling real. The dual narration setup gives you both perspectives without that jarring "now switching to the other person" energy some audiobooks have.

Survived 47 pauses and still made sense. That's the real test.

The Stuff That Made Me Squirm (In a Good Way and a Not-So-Good Way)

Fair warning: there's spice here. Like, real spice. If you're listening with kids in the car, maybe save those chapters for your secret garage time. Also content warnings for abuse and some heavy mental health themes - Della's backstory isn't light, and while it's handled with care, it's definitely present. Public Secrets goes even deeper into trauma territory, but like this one, the romance helps balance the heavier stuff.

Some listeners felt the storyline was weak, and I can see that. The plot isn't exactly surprising - you know where it's going. But honestly? Royally Screwed had that same predictable-but-satisfying arc, and I loved every second of it there too. I didn't pick this up for plot twists. I picked it up for the emotional payoff, and it delivered. Made me cry at school pickup. Worth it though.

The pacing works for distracted listening. Each chapter is digestible, the dual POV keeps things moving, and at under 7 hours, you can actually finish this in a week. For me, that's everything.

Who Should Hit Play (And Who Should Keep Scrolling)

If you want literary fiction that challenges your worldview - this isn't it. Skip it. If you want a beach romance with a tortured hero, a heroine finding her strength, and narration that makes the whole thing feel like a guilty pleasure you don't have to feel guilty about? Car time approved.

Perfect for multitasking moms who need something engaging enough to stay interesting but not so complex you lose the thread when someone starts screaming about whose turn it is on the iPad.

Adding This to the Nap Time Rotation

Satisfying ending - exactly what I needed. It's part of the Rosemary Beach series, so if you get hooked (and you might), there's more where this came from. I'm already eyeing the next one for my next batch of nap times.

Not every book needs to change your life. Sometimes you just need something that makes the car time fly by and reminds you that romance exists outside of scheduling who's doing bedtime tonight. This did that. And Sebastian York's voice didn't hurt.
