  • β€’Spice/Tropes: Very explicit content every few chapters - tortured hero, strong heroine, family saga with escalating secrets and a guaranteed cliffhanger ending.
  • β€’Bedside Manner: Aiden Snow and Lucy Rivers are competent and consistent with the series but neither delivers a standout performance in this installment.
  • β€’Discharge Summary: Borrow/Stream

Look, I need to talk about something that's been bugging me since mile marker 7 on the I-10 this morning.

Ryan Steel is supposedly going through this massive emotional crisis - his whole world is shattered, he doesn't trust anyone, he's "alone and terrified" - and yet somehow he still has time and energy for extremely detailed sex scenes every forty-five minutes. Sir. SIR. As someone who's actually worked a code and seen real people in genuine psychological distress, I can tell you that when someone's world is truly falling apart, their libido is not the thing leading the charge. I was yelling at my dashboard during this one, but for different reasons than usual.

Okay. Deep breath. Let me be fair.

Book Eight and I'm Still Here, So That Says Something

This is the eighth installment of the Steel Brothers Saga, and yes, I've been listening to the whole series. Don't judge me. Night shift means I burn through audiobooks like my unit burns through saline bags, and Helen Hardt knows how to end every single book on a cliffhanger that makes you immediately queue up the next one. It's manipulative and I respect it.

Twisted picks up with Ryan and Ruby trying to untangle this increasingly convoluted family mystery while also dealing with Ruby's own shadowy past catching up to her. The mystery elements are genuinely what keep me coming back - there's a slow drip of reveals about the Steel family secrets that Hardt spaces out across multiple books. She's smart about it. Frustrating, but smart. The problem is that eight books in, the mystery threads are getting so tangled that I'm starting to lose track of which secret belongs to which book. I found myself rewinding more than once trying to remember what was established previously versus what was new information here.

Ruby as a character has more backbone than some of the other Steel women, which I appreciate. That kind of agency in a female character is something I also found in Blood Truth, which shares that same dark-romance-meets-mystery DNA. She's actively investigating, putting herself in danger, making choices instead of just reacting. That said - and this is where Hardt loses me a bit - every time Ruby gets close to a real breakthrough, the plot detours into another extended romantic scene with Ryan. The pacing whiplash is real. Tension building, danger approaching, and then... fifteen minutes of explicit content. Then back to the mystery like nothing happened.

Aiden and Lucy Behind the Mic

Two narrators for the dual POV, which makes sense. Aiden Snow handles Ryan's chapters and Lucy Rivers takes Ruby's. The setup works well enough - you always know whose head you're in. Snow gives Ryan this low, broody energy that fits the tortured-hero vibe Hardt is going for. Rivers brings a warmth to Ruby that keeps her likable even when she's making questionable investigative decisions.

Here's my honest take though: at 7 hours and 48 minutes, neither narrator gets much room to really stretch. The chapters alternate quickly, and just when you're settling into one narrator's rhythm, you're switching to the other. Snow reading some female dialogue felt a little flat in spots - not terrible, but noticeable. Rivers had better range with the supporting characters. Neither performance blew me away, but neither one pulled me out of the story either. Competent. Consistent with the rest of the series, which matters when you're eight books deep.

The audio production is clean. No weird background hiss, no jarring volume changes between narrators. Standard stuff, nothing fancy - no sound effects or music, just straight narration. For this genre, that's fine.

Who This Is Actually For (And Who Should Run)

If you've been following the Steel Brothers Saga, you're going to listen to this regardless of what I say. You're invested. I get it. I'm invested too, even when I'm annoyed. The cliffhanger ending will have you reaching for book nine before the credits finish.

If you haven't read the previous seven books - do NOT start here. You will be completely lost. The mystery relies heavily on accumulated knowledge from the whole series, and zero effort is made to catch new readers up.

If you're looking for a standalone romance with strong medical accuracy or procedural realism... wrong book, wrong series, wrong shelf. But if you want a guilty-pleasure saga with family drama, escalating secrets, and enough spice to fog your car windows in a Phoenix summer, Hardt delivers exactly what she's known for.

I listened to the last hour parked in my driveway because the cliffhanger was coming and I could feel it. Carlos texted asking if I was okay. I told him I was just finishing something. He knows better than to ask follow-up questions about my audiobook habits at 8 AM.

The Chart Note

Perfect for that post-shift decompression when your brain is too fried for anything demanding but you still want a story with forward momentum. It's comfort food with a side of mystery. Not gourmet, not trying to be. My mom would love this (she still thinks I should've been a doctor), but I'd never tell her about the spicy parts.
