The setup is clever - Cassie, our girl from book one, is now helping guide a new candidate through S.E.C.R.E.T.'s fantasy-fulfillment program. Dauphine is a vintage clothing store owner (adorable) with a crush on a local rock star (relatable) who's too shy to make a move (extremely relatable). The dual-narrator approach with Carly Deveaux and Jane Thoma works well here since we're bouncing between two women's perspectives.
But - and this is a big but - I never connected with Dauphine the way I did with Cassie. We just don't get enough time with her. By the time I started caring about her journey, we were already racing toward the end. The book couldn't decide if it wanted to be Cassie's story or Dauphine's story, so it tried to be both and ended up shortchanging both women.
The Fantasies Hit Different (In a Good Way)
The actual fantasy sequences? Still handled beautifully. There's a tasteful dignity to how these scenes unfold - they're explicit but never gratuitous, if that makes sense. The whole point of S.E.C.R.E.T. is that these women are choosing their experiences, consenting enthusiastically, and that empowerment angle keeps the spicy content from feeling cheap.
I listened to most of this during Sophie's nap time (blessed, blessed nap time), and I'll admit there were a few moments where I had to pause and check that the baby monitor wasn't somehow broadcasting to the living room. The narration never gets annoying - both narrators maintain this warm, inviting tone that makes even the steamiest scenes feel like they're being shared by a trusted friend rather than performed.
The Ending That Made Me Say "Wait, What?"
Listen. I need my romance novels to stick the landing. I don't need everything wrapped up in a perfect bow, but I need SOMETHING. This ending is abrupt. Like, I actually checked my phone to make sure the app hadn't glitched. There are threads left dangling - Will and Cassie's relationship, Dauphine's future, the whole rock star situation - and the book just... stops.
I get that there's a third book (there's always a third book), but this felt less like a satisfying conclusion and more like the publisher said "okay, we're at word count, wrap it up." After investing almost 8 hours, I wanted more closure than I got.

Carly Deveaux and Jane Thoma do solid work here. Nothing flashy, nothing that'll win awards, but consistently good in a way that matters for this kind of book. The emotional beats land. The sexy parts sound sexy without veering into awkward territory (you know what I mean - that weird breathy narration some romance audiobooks do that makes you cringe). Beneath These Shadows has that same quality - narration that enhances the heat without making it uncomfortable. They keep the New Orleans setting feeling authentic without overdoing the accents.
At 7 hours 54 minutes, this is a manageable listen. I finished it in about a week and a half of nap times and car sits. It survived my usual 47 pauses - kids interrupting, grocery runs, one memorable moment where I had to stop mid-scene because Lucas needed help with his shoe RIGHT NOW - and I never felt lost coming back.
Who's This For (And Who Should Skip)
If you loved the first S.E.C.R.E.T. book, you'll probably want to continue the journey - just temper your expectations. Good for fans who want more Cassie content and don't mind a slightly rushed feel. If you haven't read book one, absolutely do not start here. You'll be completely lost.
Skip if you need standalone romances with neat endings. Also skip if you're looking for deep character development - this one prioritizes fantasy sequences over emotional depth.
Nap Time Well Spent (Mostly)
Not groundbreaking, but sometimes you don't need groundbreaking. Sometimes you need a steamy, easy listen that makes your car time feel like a tiny vacation from reality.
