I've been riding with Rachel Morgan through five books of ley line magic, demon deals, and Jenks being a four-inch pixy with more personality than most full-sized protagonists. The story here is genuinely good - Rachel's dealing with the fallout of trafficking in demon magic, Algaliarept is closing in, and there's a family secret reveal that recontextualizes a lot of what came before. Kim Harrison knows how to escalate stakes while keeping her signature dark-comedy-meets-urban-fantasy vibe intact. This is a 16-hour commitment and the plot earns most of those hours.
But we need to talk about the elephant in the headphones.
The Narrator Swap That Broke the Build
So imagine you've been running a production system for five releases, everything's stable, your team knows the codebase - and then someone swaps out a core dependency without a migration plan. That's what happened here. Marguerite Gavin narrated the first several books, and switching to Gigi Bermingham mid-series is... jarring. It's not that Bermingham is bad at narration broadly. She actually nails Rachel's sarcasm pretty well, and her emotional delivery during the more terrifying demon encounters genuinely works. When Rachel is scared, you feel it.
But the mispronunciations. Oh, the mispronunciations. Key terms like "ley line" and character names like Trent Kalamack's full name get mangled in ways that pull you right out of the story. If you've listened to the previous books, your brain has these pronunciations cached, and every time Bermingham says them differently, it's like a validation error you can't ignore. It's the audio equivalent of a lint warning on every other line - technically the code still runs, but you can't not see it.
And then there's Jenks. In print, Jenks is this foul-mouthed, fiercely loyal pixy dad who steals every scene. Bermingham voices him with this whiny, high-pitched quality that strips away his edge. Instead of sounding like a tiny warrior with attitude, he sounds like someone complaining about their latte order. It fundamentally changes the character dynamic, and since Jenks is in roughly 40% of the scenes, that's a lot of listening time where you're wincing.
There are also these musical interludes between sections that feel completely unnecessary - they don't match the tone and they break whatever immersion Bermingham managed to build.
What Actually Works (Because It's Not All Bad)
Here's the thing - the story underneath all of this is legitimately strong. Harrison's worldbuilding in the Hollows universe keeps getting deeper. The ever-after sequences, where Rachel has to voluntarily walk into demon territory, are tense and well-constructed. That layered, mythology-dense approach to supernatural territory is something I also found in Sing, Unburied, Sing, though Ward goes somewhere much darker and more devastating with it - my notes from that listen are basically just the word 'haunting' repeated until I ran out of screen space. The family secret plotline adds real emotional weight. And Bermingham's read of Rachel's internal monologue - the snarky, slightly overwhelmed, trying-to-hold-it-together energy - actually fits. Her voice has this down-to-earth quality that works for a protagonist who's basically a magical disaster bisexual (my words, not Harrison's) stumbling through increasingly dangerous situations.
If this were my first Hollows book and I had no point of comparison, I'd probably rate the narration a full point higher. The problem is context. Series continuity matters in audio.
Who Should Queue This Up (And Who Should Bail)
If you've been reading the Hollows in print and want to try audio - honestly, start with the earlier books narrated by Gavin first. If you're already deep in the series on audio and can tolerate a narrator change, the story is worth pushing through, but maybe bump to 1.25x to minimize the voice quirks. If you're a completionist who needs the full series in audio format, you'll survive. You'll complain about it (I did, internally, for about six hours), but you'll survive.
Skip this if: pronunciation consistency matters to you more than plot, or if you're the kind of listener who can't unhear a bad character voice. This is NOT a commute listen - the narration issues require too much active tolerance for a 6 AM train ride. I tried. I switched to it during an evening at home instead, which helped.

The ROI on this audiobook is complicated. You're getting a genuinely solid urban fantasy entry in a series that keeps getting better, delivered through narration that ranges from "actually pretty good" to "why is Jenks voiced like that." I finished it in about four sessions over a week, mostly evening listening after Kevin fell asleep. The story pulled me through. The narrator... I tolerated. If Harrison's plotting is the feature, Bermingham's performance is the known bug you ship with because the release deadline is tomorrow.
I wouldn't spend a credit on this version. Hit your library app, stream it, and save that credit for something with narration that matches the material.
