Night Shift Mode πŸŒƒ

Look, I need to be honest about something. I don't usually reach for cozy paranormal mysteries. My reading life is basically medical thrillers where I can yell at my dashboard about incorrect defibrillator usage, or memoirs that make me ugly-cry on my drive home from night shift. I tried branching out with Giving Up The Ghost: A Paranormal Thriller Short Story, which at least had the paranormal angle, but it still leaned too heavy for what I needed. But sometimes - and I mean this - sometimes you need a palate cleanser. Something that doesn't require you to process trauma while simultaneously processing your own trauma from a 12-hour shift in the ICU.

Murder's a Witch hit my playlist during a particularly brutal stretch of nights. Three codes in one shift. I needed something light. Something fun. Something where the stakes were "will the witch solve the murder" and not "will this patient make it through the night."

Amanda Ronconi Carried Me Home

I'd heard her name floating around audiobook circles, but this was my first time actually listening to her work. And honestly? She's the reason this book works as well as it does.

Here's the thing about narrators - they can make or break a cozy mystery. The genre lives and dies on charm, on that warm feeling you get when you're settling into a story that's not going to destroy you emotionally. Ronconi gets it. Her voice has this quality that's hard to describe - warm but not saccharine, funny but not trying too hard. She reads Holly Boldt like she actually likes her, which sounds obvious but trust me, you can always tell when a narrator is just collecting a paycheck.

The character voices are distinct without being cartoonish. The vampire roommate sounds different from the shifter roommate sounds different from the ghostly landlord. I never had to rewind to figure out who was talking, which - as someone who listens exclusively during that hazy post-shift drive - is absolutely essential. My brain at 7 AM after a night shift is not operating at full capacity. Ronconi made it easy.

Paranormal Halfway House Drama (And I'm Here For It)

So the premise: Holly's a witch with secrets, she's been relocated to a halfway house for displaced paranormals after some scandal we don't fully understand yet, and now there's a murder to solve. It's cozy mystery 101, but with fangs and fur and ectoplasm.

I'll admit - the story drops you in without a ton of backstory. You're kind of piecing together Holly's past as you go, which some people might find frustrating. Personally? I didn't mind. It felt like starting a new job where everyone knows the drama except you. Very relatable. (I've been the new nurse on a unit. I know this feeling intimately.)

The murder mystery itself is... fine. It's not going to blow your mind with its twists. But that's not really the point, is it? The point is hanging out with Holly and her chaotic roommates, watching her navigate small-town paranormal politics while trying not to blow her cover. The civil war brewing between the vampire and shifter roommates gave me flashbacks to hospital break room drama, honestly. Same energy, different species.

Danielle Garrett writes with a light touch. The humor lands without being obnoxious. The paranormal elements are fun without requiring you to memorize a complex magic system. It's accessible in the best way - you can zone out for a minute, zone back in, and still know exactly what's happening.

Seven Hours of Not Crying

At just under seven hours, this is the ideal length for a week of commutes. I finished it over four shifts, and it did exactly what I needed it to do - gave my brain something pleasant to focus on while I transitioned from "nurse mode" to "mom mode."

Is it high literature? No. Is it going to make you think deep thoughts about the human condition? Also no. But Carlos asked me why I was smiling in the car instead of crying, and I had to explain that sometimes books can just be... fun. He looked at me like I'd grown a second head. (To be fair, my usual audiobook fare does tend toward the emotionally devastating.)

The production quality is clean - no weird audio glitches, no background noise, nothing that pulled me out of the story. For a cozy mystery audiobook, that's really all you need.

Who This Is (And Isn't) For

If you're looking for an intense, edge-of-your-seat thriller with graphic violence and high stakes - this ain't it. Skip it. Go find something that'll make your heart race.

But if you want something warm and funny and charming? If you need a break from heavy content? If you're a night shift worker who just needs something pleasant in your ears during that sunrise drive home? Murder's a Witch delivers exactly what it promises. Cozy paranormal mystery with a likeable witch protagonist and a narrator who clearly loves the material.

I'm probably going to grab the next one in the series. My mom would love this, actually - she's always asking me for book recommendations that aren't "so dark, anak." This one I can actually share with her.
