Is Forget Me Not worth listening to?

A Dying Woman's Last Words Change Everything That opening line hit me at 4 AM during a quiet shift. Claire Allan plays fair with her clues but she's sneaky - I genuinely didn't see the ending coming, and I'm not easy to surprise. Anne Bird's Northern Irish lilt makes even mundane sentences feel like they're hiding secrets. Our verdict: Worth a Credit.

Forget Me Not Audiobook Review: Irish Thriller That Surprises

Night Shift Mode 🌃

"I disappeared on a Tuesday afternoon." That opening line hit me somewhere around 4 AM, when the trauma bay had finally gone quiet and I was catching up on charting. The unit was that particular kind of still that makes you nervous—the calm before some multi-car pileup rolls in. And here's Clare, bleeding out on a roadside in Ireland, whispering her last words to a stranger walking her dog. As someone who's actually worked a code, I can tell you—people don't usually get dramatic final words. They get confusion, fear, sometimes nothing at all. But fiction gets to be kinder than reality, and those whispered words become the engine that drives this whole twisty mess forward. ## The Irish Lilt That Kept Me Awake Anne Bird and Melanie MacHugh split narrator duties here, and Bird's accent is the real star. There's something about that Northern Irish lilt that makes even mundane sentences feel like they're hiding secrets. The dual narration works—you always know whose head you're in, which matters when a thriller is juggling multiple perspectives and timelines. Here's my one gripe, and it's minor: I never fully connected with Rachel as a character. Not the narrator's fault—MacHugh does fine work—but something about Rachel's chapters felt like they were spinning wheels while Elizabeth's sections actually moved the plot. Some listeners apparently fast-forwarded through the repetitive bits. I didn't, but I understood the impulse. ## When the Twists Actually Land Look, I read (listen to) a lot of thrillers. Occupational hazard—they're the only thing that can compete with the adrenaline of a real shift. [Burning Bright](/reviews/burning-bright) had that same quality—kept me guessing when I'm usually three steps ahead. Most of them, I've figured out the killer by hour three. This one? I definitely did not have it figured out. Claire Allan plays fair with her clues, but she's sneaky about it. The ending twist genuinely surprised me, and I'm not easy to surprise. (Carlos can confirm—I ruined three seasons of a crime show for him by calling every reveal. He still hasn't forgiven me for the one about the neighbor.) The setup is classic but effective: Elizabeth finds a dying woman, becomes obsessed with the case, realizes the killer might not be done. [Good Girl](/reviews/good-girl) works the same angle—that creeping realization that danger isn't some distant threat. What elevates *Forget Me Not* is the psychological tension. This isn't about gore or shock value—it's about the slow-building dread of knowing someone dangerous is still out there, and they might be closer than you think. ## The Medical Stuff (Because You Knew I'd Mention It) There's not a ton of medical detail here—the attack happens, Clare dies, and we move on. What's there is handled respectfully. No ridiculous "clear!" defibrillator scenes. No miraculous recoveries. The violence is brutal but not gratuitous, which I appreciate. I've seen enough real trauma that I don't need fiction to wallow in it. Content warning for those who need it: knife attack, violence against women, psychological manipulation. It's a thriller, so none of this should surprise you, but it's worth noting. ## Who This Is For (And Who Should Skip) Perfect for post-shift decompression. The pacing keeps you engaged without demanding your full attention during the slower Rachel chapters. At just under 10 hours, it's a solid week of commutes or two really long night shifts. Skip it if you need constant action—there are stretches where we're deep in character psychology rather than plot movement. I didn't mind (I like knowing *why* people do terrible things, not just watching them do it), but your mileage may vary. If you've read Claire Allan before, listeners are calling this possibly her best work. If you haven't, it's a solid entry point. ## Night Shift Approved I finished this one in the hospital parking lot, engine running, not quite ready to go inside and start my shift. That's the sign of a good thriller—when you're willing to sit in a hot car in Phoenix summer just to hear how it ends. The dual narration works, the twists land, and Bird's accent alone is worth the listen. It's not perfect—those repetitive middle chapters drag a bit, and Rachel never quite grabbed me the way Elizabeth did—but it's a genuinely engaging psychological thriller that doesn't insult your intelligence. Carlos asked why I was so quiet at breakfast. I blamed the heat. Really, I was still thinking about those last words Clare whispered to a stranger on a roadside in Derry. Some things stick with you.
