Mood ๐ŸŒ™

Okay so. I need to be honest with you all because that's what we do here.

I was deep in a late-night design session โ€” building out brand assets for a mezcal company, ironically โ€” and I'd just finished a devastatingly beautiful literary fiction audiobook that left me emotionally wrung out like a used dishrag. I needed something that required absolutely zero emotional investment. Something my brain could process on autopilot while I tweaked kerning for four hours straight. Frida was asleep on my keyboard (as one does), Diego was judging me from the bookshelf, and I thought: you know what? Let's try something completely outside my usual lane.

Reader. I tried.

Thirteen Hours Is a LOT of Hours for This

Here's the thing about erotica collections in audiobook format โ€” the concept makes sense on paper. Background listening, quick stories, easy in-and-out (pun... intended, I guess). But at nearly fourteen hours, this bundle of four collections asks for a serious time commitment, and the writing doesn't earn it. The stories read like they were generated from a checklist of search terms rather than written from any place of genuine desire or fantasy. There's a flatness to the prose that even the spiciest scenario can't overcome. Like โ€” I've read romance with genuinely scorching scenes that made me fan myself and text my group chat in all caps. This isn't that. Reckless Abandon didn't fully land for me either, but it at least had moments where the heat felt earned rather than catalogued. The scenarios jump from BDSM to threesomes to taboo cousin romance with the emotional depth of a Wikipedia summary of those things.

I kept waiting for at least one story to make me feel something โ€” heat, tension, even a guilty thrill. But the characters are so thin they're basically just bodies performing choreography. No buildup, no longing, no that-moment-before-the-kiss tension that makes you hold your breath. And listen, I'm someone who believes erotica IS a valid form of storytelling. My abuela's telenovelas had more sexual tension in a single locked-eyes-across-the-hacienda scene than this entire collection manages in fourteen hours.

Sara Rice and SR Vox Are Doing Their Best With What They've Got

Two narrators splitting duties across four collections โ€” that's a lot of material to carry. And honestly? I can't tell you much about what distinguishes their performances because the writing gives them almost nothing to work with. The dialogue is so generic that the narration ends up feeling like someone reading a script at a table read rather than inhabiting characters. There's no shift in energy between a supposedly dominant character and a submissive one. No breathiness when a scene is supposed to be building. No edge. It's competent reading of incompetent writing, which is its own kind of sad.

I will say โ€” and I genuinely mean this as a compliment โ€” neither narrator sounds like they're judging the material, which takes professionalism. But professionalism isn't the same as a performance that pulls you in. Compare this to, say, how Savannah Peachwood or Andi Arndt handle spicy scenes with actual vocal texture and pacing that mirrors the tension on the page. That's what good erotica narration sounds like. This is just... reading.

Who This Is (and Very Much Isn't) For

If you want erotica that's basically a greatest-hits compilation of explicit scenarios with zero emotional connective tissue between them โ€” fine, this exists and it's here for you. No judgment from me. But if you're someone like me who needs to FEEL something, who needs even a sliver of character development or tension or chemistry to make the explicit parts land? Skip this. Hard skip.

I genuinely believe good erotica makes you care about the people involved before it undresses them. This collection skips straight to the undressing and wonders why you're not invested.

Also โ€” and this is a practical note โ€” at nearly fourteen hours, this is priced and sized like a full novel. You could listen to an entire Talia Hibbert romance in that time and get scorching heat PLUS characters you'd die for PLUS narration that makes you feel like you're eavesdropping on something real. Just saying.

My Cats Deserve Better and So Do You

Diego literally knocked this off my queue by stepping on my phone at hour six. I'm choosing to interpret that as a sign. I finished the rest out of reviewer obligation, but I kept drifting back to my design work and forgetting a story was even playing โ€” which, for someone who listens at 1.0x specifically to savor every word, tells you everything. This book felt like fast food that isn't even hot anymore. It's technically food. It will technically fill a gap. But you won't remember it tomorrow and you definitely won't crave it again.

Abuela would have clutched her rosary, yes โ€” but not in the fun, scandalized telenovela way. More in the "mija, you spent money on THIS?" way.
