Okay so can we talk about how this book made me feel like I was doing something I shouldn't be doing? Like listening to it while designing wedding invitations felt genuinely unhinged. The cognitive dissonance of choosing between ivory and cream cardstock while Hunter is doing... well, Hunter things. My cats kept giving me looks. Frida literally walked across my keyboard during one of the spicier scenes like she was trying to save me from myself.
But here's the thing—I couldn't stop. Eleven hours of morally questionable decisions and I inhaled it like it was oxygen.
The Enemies-to-Lovers Pipeline Hit Different
Look, I knew what I was signing up for with an MC romance. The Reapers series has a reputation, and Devil's Game delivers exactly what it promises. Em is sheltered to the point of absurdity—her dad literally shot her last boyfriend—and Hunter sees her as a weapon against his rival club. It's messy. It's manipulative. It's the kind of setup that would make my abuela clutch her rosary so hard it would leave marks.
And yet. AND YET.
The chemistry is *chef's kiss*. When these two finally stop lying to each other (spoiler: it takes a while), the emotional payoff is real. I ugly-cried around chapter... honestly I lost track, but it was late and I was supposed to be sleeping and instead I was in my feelings about a biker named Hunter. This is my life now.
The pacing does drag in the middle—there's a section where the club politics take over and I found myself zoning out a bit, designing a logo for a coffee shop while only half-listening. But then Joanna Wylde throws in a gut-punch moment and suddenly I'm fully back, pausing my work because I need to process what just happened.
Two Voices, One Chaotic Heart
The dual narration situation here is interesting. Tatiana Sokolov handles Em's chapters and she's spot on with the naive-but-not-stupid energy Em needs. There's this vulnerability in her delivery that made me want to protect Em even when she was making choices that had me yelling "GIRL, NO" at my laptop.
Todd Haberkorn does Hunter, and honestly? He nails the gruff biker thing without making it cartoonish. When Hunter's being manipulative, you can hear it. When he starts actually falling for Em—really falling, not just playing the game—there's this shift in his voice that's subtle but it's there. The man understood the assignment.
That said, some listeners have mentioned Sokolov's accent can be distracting. I didn't personally have an issue with it, but I also listen to a lot of audiobooks with varied accents so maybe I'm just used to it? Your mileage may vary.
The production quality is clean—no weird audio jumps or background noise that I noticed. Just two narrators doing their thing while I pretended to be a functional adult with a design deadline.
Who's Going to Love This (And Who Should Run)
I need to be real with you: this is not a book for everyone. The mature content is MATURE. The power dynamics are complicated. There are moments that made me uncomfortable in ways I'm still processing. If you want heat but less moral ambiguity, His Sub might be more your speed—still steamy, way less "should I be rooting for this guy?" But if you're into dark romance, if you want something that feels a little dangerous, if you're tired of safe love interests who would never do anything morally gray—this is your book. Skip it if dubious consent or manipulation are hard limits for you.
It's a rainy Sunday book, but like, a rainy Sunday where you're ignoring your responsibilities and eating cereal for dinner. The vibes are immaculate if you're in the right headspace for them.
Would my abuela have loved this one? She would have been scandalized and then secretly finished it in one sitting while pretending to watch her novelas. Miss you, Abuela. You would have had OPINIONS about Hunter.
Abuela Would've Finished This in One Sitting (And So Did I)
If you're new to the Reapers series, you can technically start here, but there are references to earlier books that'll hit harder if you've read them. I went in mostly blind and still got emotionally wrecked, so do with that information what you will.
My heart. MY HEART. This book grabbed it and didn't let go for eleven hours.
