
Washington Irving
Washington Irving (1783â1859) was an American author, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat. He is best known for his short stories "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle," which are among the first American short stories and have become iconic in American culture. Irving was also a respected biographer and historian, notably writing a five-volume biography of George Washington.
