Optimal Setting 🔬

Everyone assumes I listen to audiobooks to escape reality. (False. I listen to analyze behavior patterns without needing IRB approval.) So when I picked up Reign, I expected the standard "bad boy meets good girl" formula. You know the one—it's basically the plot of every Bollywood movie my mother forced me to watch in the 90s, just with more leather and less dancing.

But here's the thing—this wasn't just a romance. It was a stress test.

The Voice That Maybe Tried Too Hard

Let's address the elephant in the recording booth: Alexandre Steele. The data—and my own ears—suggests this is a polarizing performance. He's doing this deep, gravelly, "I gargle with asphalt" voice for Reign. Psychologically, I get it. He's a 1%er, a criminal, a guy who has seen the darkest parts of humanity. He's projecting dominance. But honestly? It distracted me.

I was jogging along the Charles River, and every time he growled, I wanted to stop and offer him a throat lozenge. It felt performative. A little too caricature-ish for a character who is already written as an intense alpha. If you're sensitive to over-acting or voices that sound like they're trying to vibrate your headphones off your head, you might struggle here.

Trauma Bonding But Make It Romance

Now, Jillian Macie? She's the control group in this experiment. She narrates the heroine—who is thrust into a nightmare scenario involving human trafficking (huge trigger warning there, by the way)—and she nails the panic-to-power arc.

Usually, in these "innocent meets criminal" tropes, the female lead exhibits learned helplessness. It drives me up the wall. But here, Macie gives her some spine. The chemistry between the two characters is essentially a case study in trauma bonding—high stress, high stakes, rapid attachment. My therapist would have a field day dissecting why I found their dynamic compelling despite the red flags. But the writing works. Gadziala understands that when people are pushed to the brink, they don't act politely. They get messy.

Who's Going to Love This (And Who Should Run)

If you're into dark romance with morally bankrupt heroes and don't mind narration that occasionally sounds like a motorcycle engine, this one's for you. Skip it if human trafficking content is a hard no, or if over-the-top male vocal performances make you cringe.

My Clinical Assessment

The pacing was mostly solid, keeping my heart rate up enough to count as cardio, but the ending? It felt weird. Abrupt. Like the author suddenly remembered this needed a Happily Ever After and sprinted for the exit.

Is it a perfect audiobook? No. The male narration is an acquired taste—like bitter coffee or reading Freud. But if you can get past the growling, the story itself has enough grit and psychological friction to keep you interested. Ruthless King has that same kind of raw intensity—morally complicated men, high-stakes power dynamics, the whole package. Just maybe speed it up to 1.25x. It smooths out the edges.
