Mom's Notes

A sprawling 28-hour epic that somehow manages to grip you even when consumed in 847 tiny chunks between school pickups and sibling squabbles.

  • β€’Easy on Tired Ears?: Rebecca Soler delivers emotionally rich performances for Violet's POV with impressive range, though dual narration with Teddy Hamilton occasionally creates character voice confusion.
  • β€’Nap-Time Friendly?: The story maintains strong momentum through cliffhangers and battle sequences, though the middle stretches with training and relationship tension sometimes feel slower than the predecessor.
  • β€’Production Quality: Generally solid execution with minor hiccupsβ€”occasional volume fluctuations and mouth sounds that slip through editing, noticeable in quieter listening environments.
  • β€’Car Time Approved?: Worth a Credit

Mom of 3. Audiobook time is 45min hiding in car. No shame.

🎧 Catches audiobooks between camp drop-offs and pool pickups, loves dragon battles despite constant interruptions, can't survive books requiring character wikis.

Okay, 28 Hours. I Know.

Look, I saw that runtime and almost closed the app. Twenty-eight hours is not "nap time listening." That's like... three weeks of my life, minimum. But I'd already devoured Fourth Wing during Sophie's ear infection saga last winter (silver lining to four days of couch cuddles, I guess), and I needed to know what happened next. Fourth Wing had me so hooked that 28 hours felt like a reasonable life choice. So I committed. And honestly? I don't regret it. Much.

I started this one during the summer chaos - pool pickups, camp drop-offs, the endless snack rotation. Which means I listened to this book in approximately 847 tiny chunks. The fact that I could still follow the plot after pausing mid-dragon-battle to break up a fight over whose turn it was on the swing? That's actually impressive. The story has enough momentum that my brain could click back in pretty quickly, even when Sophie decided 2pm was NOT nap time anymore (again).

The Dual Narrator Thing Actually Works

Rebecca Soler handles most of the heavy lifting here, and she's good. Like, really good at the emotional stuff. She brought the same intensity to Fourth Wing, which is why I was so glad she came back for this one. When Violet's having a moment - and there are MANY moments - Soler delivers. You feel the desperation, the anger, the swoony bits with Xaden. She's got range. The battle scenes especially had me white-knuckling the steering wheel in the school pickup line, which probably looked insane to the other moms.

Teddy Hamilton comes in for Xaden's POV chapters, and here's where it gets a little bumpy. His voice is fine - deep, broody, exactly what you'd expect for a morally grey love interest. But some listeners mentioned confusion between certain character voices, and yeah, I noticed it too. There were a few times I had to rewind because I genuinely wasn't sure who was talking. Not a dealbreaker, but when you're already juggling mental load for three kids, you don't need extra confusion from your audiobook.

Also - and this is petty - there are some production hiccups. Little volume changes here and there, some mouth sounds that probably should've been edited out. Nothing terrible, but when you're listening in a quiet car hiding from your family (no judgment), you notice these things.

Dragons, Secrets, and Cliffhangers That Hurt

If you loved Fourth Wing, you'll probably love this too. It's more of everything - more dragons, more political intrigue, more Xaden being frustratingly secretive, more Violet proving everyone wrong. The stakes are higher, the world gets bigger, and there are twists that genuinely surprised me. Rebecca Yarros knows how to end a chapter on a cliffhanger, which is both a blessing and a curse when you're trying to stop at a reasonable point.

The pacing is... different from the first book. Slower in places. There's a lot of setup, a lot of training sequences, a lot of relationship tension that sometimes felt like it was spinning its wheels. I didn't mind because I was invested in these characters, but if you need constant action, you might find yourself zoning out during the middle third.

The romance is still central, and it's still intense. Without spoiling anything, let's just say there are scenes that are definitely not appropriate for listening with kids in the car. I learned this the hard way when Emma asked what "that noise" was during a particularly... heated moment. Cool cool cool, just casually traumatizing my seven-year-old.

Fair Warning: This Is A Commitment

I'm not going to pretend this is a quick listen. It's not. At 1.25x speed (my survival setting), it still took me almost three weeks to finish. And the ending? Without spoilers - it's a lot. I was ugly-crying in my car in the Target parking lot, which is basically my second home at this point. The employees probably thought I was having a breakdown. (I mean, I was, but in a good way?)

The length means you really need to be invested in this world. If you bounced off Fourth Wing, don't force yourself through 28 hours hoping it gets better. But if you're already a fan? This delivers. The world-building expands in ways that made me genuinely excited, and by the end I was immediately looking up when book three comes out.

Who's This For?

Perfect for: Romantasy lovers who don't mind a slow burn (and I mean SLOW - the tension in this book could power a small city). Fans of enemies-to-lovers who are already lovers but still have trust issues. Anyone who finished Fourth Wing and needs answers.

Skip if: You need short, contained stories. You're bothered by similar-sounding character voices. You don't have three weeks to dedicate to one book. Or if you're not already invested in the series - this is NOT a standalone.

I finished this during a combination of nap times, car line waits, and approximately twelve "I'm just going to sit in the driveway for a few more minutes" sessions. High praise from this exhausted mom. The narration carried me through even when the plot dragged, and the emotional payoffs were worth the investment.

Made me cry at school pickup. Worth it though.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go find something shorter and fluffier before I commit to another month-long audiobook journey. My car time can only handle so much epic fantasy.
