Mom's Notes

Problematic vampire romance I couldn't stop listening to

  • Overall Vibe: Dark, intense paranormal romance with complex Carpathian mythology that pulls you in despite the dated relationship dynamics.
  • Nap-Time Friendly?: Slow burn that really means slow - 18 hours with stretches of internal monologuing, best at 1.25x speed.
  • Easy on Tired Ears?: Abby Craden's controlled, grounded delivery works beautifully for Raven but feels less natural for Mikhail's perspective.
  • Car Time Approved?: Borrow/Stream

Sanity Break 🚗

Look, I'm just going to say it: this book is problematic and I loved it anyway. There. That's the whole review. You can stop reading now.

But if you're still here, let me explain how I ended up spending 18 hours with a centuries-old vampire who honestly needs therapy more than a lifemate.

The Guilty Pleasure I Didn't See Coming

I started Dark Prince during Sophie's nap time on a Tuesday, mostly because I'd heard Christine Feehan basically invented the paranormal romance genre as we know it. And you know what? After finishing this author's cut edition with its extra 100 pages, I get it. I get why this series has like 40 books. The worldbuilding is genuinely impressive—Carpathians, their complex history, the way they're dying out without lifemates. Feehan built something here.

But here's where I have to be honest with you (and myself): Mikhail, our dark prince, is... a lot. The possessiveness. The "you are mine" declarations before they've had a real conversation. The way he literally enters Raven's mind without permission. If my husband pulled any of this, I'd be calling my mom and a divorce lawyer. In that order.

And yet. AND YET. I kept listening. During school pickup. During the 45 minutes of car-sitting-in-garage time. During the dishes. What does that say about me? (Don't answer that.)

Abby Craden's Voice in My Head

Here's the thing about the narration—Abby Craden has this low, controlled delivery that some listeners apparently find too matter-of-fact. I actually liked it? She made Raven feel grounded and strong, which the character desperately needed given all the vampire drama happening around her. When Raven pushes back against Mikhail's more controlling moments, Craden gives her real backbone.

That said, I can see why some folks wanted a male narrator for a book called "Dark Prince." We spend a lot of time in Mikhail's head, and Craden's interpretation of his voice is... fine. Not swoon-worthy, but serviceable. She's clearly more comfortable with Raven's perspective, and honestly that worked for me. Made me root for the human woman dealing with an immortal boyfriend who doesn't understand boundaries.

The pacing is slow. Really slow. This is 18 hours of audiobook, and there are stretches where not much happens except internal monologuing about the lifemate bond. I listened at 1.25x and it felt right—any slower and I might have zoned out during the longer romantic scenes.

The Uncomfortable Conversation

I can't write this review without addressing the elephant in the room. Some readers have called Mikhail's behavior emotionally abusive, and... yeah. The mind control stuff. The possessiveness framed as romance. That same dynamic of control disguised as devotion shows up in Wife Between Us: A Novel, though in a contemporary setting that makes it even more unsettling. The "I know what's best for you" attitude. It's a lot by 2024 standards.

This book was originally published in 1999. Does that excuse it? No. But it does contextualize it. This was the era of alpha heroes who "claimed" their women, and Feehan was writing to that market. If you go in knowing that—and knowing that the extra 100 pages in this edition apparently don't soften those edges—you can make an informed choice.

I made my choice. I listened to the whole thing and immediately looked up whether the next book is available at my library. (It is. I have a problem.)

Who This Is (and Isn't) For

Okay, real talk. This is for you if:

  • You love paranormal romance and want to understand where the genre came from
  • You can separate fantasy from reality and enjoy problematic tropes in fiction
  • You're already a Feehan fan wanting the expanded edition
  • You have 18 hours to kill and want something immersive

Skip it if:

  • Controlling hero behavior is a hard no for you (totally valid)
  • You need fast pacing to stay engaged
  • You specifically want a male narrator for romance
  • You're looking for something to finish in a week (this took me almost two)

The production quality is clean, no weird audio issues. Small mercies.

One and Done, But I'm Not Done

Probably not relistening to this one—once was enough. But am I going to keep going with the series? Almost definitely. There's something weirdly comforting about the Carpathian world, even with all its red flags. Sometimes you just want vampires and drama and a guaranteed happy ending, you know?

Made me feel things at school pickup. Not proud of it. But not sorry either.
