This book is basically a snack. Not a gourmet meal, not a seven-course tasting menu - a snack. And sometimes when you're hiding in your car at 8:47 PM because all three kids are finally someone else's problem (husband's turn, don't @ me), a snack is exactly what you want.
Castle of Kings is MC romance with a possessive alpha hero named Jake Castle - yes, his last name is literally Castle and the MC club is called Kings, so we're not exactly going for subtlety here - and the president's sister, who is very much off-limits. You know where this is going. I knew where this was going. The yogurt stain on my steering wheel knew where this was going. But at 5 hours and 32 minutes, it doesn't overstay its welcome, and sometimes predictable is just... fine?
Troy Duran Could Narrate My Grocery List
Okay so here's the deal with the dual narration situation. Troy Duran doing Jake's chapters? Absolutely sold. The man's voice has this low, rough-around-the-edges quality that makes you believe he rides a motorcycle and has questionable decision-making skills. He gives each of the MC brothers their own vocal flavor - you can tell when it's Nix versus when it's Peach without checking the chapter title. His delivery in the romantic scenes hits that sweet spot between intense and not-laughing-out-loud-at-a-red-light.
Jillian Macie doing the heroine's chapters is... a different experience. When she's in her own voice, she's perfectly fine. Solid emotional delivery, good pacing. But when she has to voice male characters - specifically when she tries to do Peach - it goes sideways. There's this Australian accent that creeps in during certain character switches and I genuinely cannot figure out why. Are we in Australia? Is Peach Australian? (He is not.) It pulled me out of the story more than once, which is saying something because I was also being pulled out by Sophie screaming through the baby monitor that she was NOT sleeping.
I found myself wishing the split was heavier on Troy's side. Like 70/30. Maybe 80/20. Sorry Jillian.
The "My Brother Will Kill You" Trope Gets a Workout
Look, if you read MC romance, you know the playbook. Forbidden attraction, protective older brother who runs the club, danger lurking because of club business, hero who will literally throw himself in front of a bullet. Betty Shreffler hits every beat you'd expect. Jake deciding the heroine is "his" approximately four seconds after meeting her? Check. The same possessive-hero-meets-forbidden-setup runs through Dark Magic, though that one actually slows down long enough to let you sit in the tension for a while. The brother having complicated feelings about his best club member wanting his sister? Check. A threat that conveniently forces them into close proximity? Big check.
The romance itself moves fast - almost too fast in spots. One minute they're circling each other with all this tension and the next minute we're at full throttle with not a lot of emotional groundwork laid. I wanted more of the push-and-pull, more of the moments where Jake shows vulnerability underneath all that alpha posturing. There are glimpses - Shreffler clearly knows how to write a charged scene - but the pacing rushes past some of the good stuff to get to the next plot point.
That said, Dillon's moments were a nice surprise. Without spoiling it, there are some secondary character beats that made me care about what happens next in the series, which is smart writing for a Book 1.
Who's Going to Love This (And Who Should Scroll Past)
If you're a MC romance reader who wants a quick, spicy listen with a protective hero and a guaranteed happy ending - this delivers exactly that. Not groundbreaking, but sometimes you don't need groundbreaking. I finished this across two nap times and one gloriously long car-sit. High praise from a schedule perspective.
If you're picky about narration consistency or need your romance to have a slow emotional build before the physical stuff, this might frustrate you. The accent wobbles from Jillian Macie are real and they're distracting, and the story doesn't have a ton of surprises up its sleeve.
For me it was a solid palate cleanser between heavier reads. Like eating string cheese after a salad. Wife Between Us was my last "heavier read" before this one, and honestly the whiplash between that level of psychological tension and Jake Castle's motorcycle posturing was exactly the reset my brain needed. Nobody's winning awards but everybody's satisfied.
Car Time Verdict: Quick, Hot, Slightly Uneven
Survived 47 pauses and still made sense - the dual POV chapters are clearly labeled and easy to jump back into. At 5.5 hours this is practically a novella by audiobook standards, and I appreciated not having to remember seventeen side characters and a complicated club hierarchy. Jake Castle is exactly the kind of fictional man you want to spend a few hours with before returning to your real life of stepping on Legos and negotiating bedtime. Satisfying ending - exactly what I needed. Just maybe keep your expectations calibrated to "fun beach read" and not "book club discussion" and you'll be fine.
(My book club will love this. If I ever have time for book club again.)
