Triage Notes

French villa escapism with narrator growing pains

  • โ€ขBedside Manner: Grace Grant is vibrant and perfect for Chloe, but Kirby Heyborne's soft delivery doesn't match Bennett's commanding personality.
  • โ€ขSpice/Tropes: Heavy on the steam and enemies-to-lovers banter - this is exactly what it promises to be.
  • โ€ขShift Tempo: Quick listen at 3.5 hours with snappy dialogue, though some may want to speed up the male narrator's sections.
  • โ€ขDischarge Summary: Borrow/Stream

Is this for you?

โœ…Pick this if: you need light steamy banter after heavy days and accept a thin plot ยท you love enemies-to-lovers spice and want a quick French villa escape ยท you want witty fight-flirt dialogue and don't mind heavy explicit content
โŒSkip if: you need deep character backstory or complex plot twists to stay engaged ยท you want the male narrator to match a commanding CEO intensity ยท you prefer fade-to-black romance or dislike soft narrator delivery

Night Shift Mode ๐ŸŒƒ

Look, I grabbed this one specifically because I needed something light after a brutal week of back-to-back traumas. Three codes in one shift. I was fried. So when I tell you Beautiful Bitch was exactly the mental vacation I needed during my 3 AM charting sessions, I mean it.

But here's the thing - I almost didn't finish it. And not because of the story.

The Voice Situation

Grace Grant? Absolutely nailed it. Her Chloe is vibrant, a little unhinged in the best way, and she delivers the internal monologue like she's your best friend texting you from a work bathroom. I was grinning at my steering wheel during her chapters.

Kirby Heyborne though... okay. I've heard him in other stuff and he's won like twenty Earphones Awards, so the man clearly knows what he's doing. But his Bennett didn't land for me. The character is supposed to be this intense, commanding, slightly insufferable CEO type - and Heyborne's delivery is soft. Slow. Almost gentle? It's like casting a golden retriever to play a Doberman. Not bad acting. Just... a mismatch.

Carlos asked why I kept making faces during my drive home. I told him the audiobook was giving me cognitive dissonance. He nodded like he understood. (He did not understand.)

What You're Actually Getting

This is a novella - three and a half hours - which means it's basically one extended scenario with some banter wrapped around it. Chloe's career is taking off, Bennett wants her attention, they end up at a French villa, things get steamy. That's... pretty much it.

And honestly? That's fine. I wasn't looking for plot complexity at 4 AM while updating patient charts. I wanted witty back-and-forth and some spice. Fake It Till You Make It scratched that same itch during my last string of night shiftsโ€”low stakes, high banter. This one delivered on both counts.

The humor is what carries it. Christina Lauren (which is apparently two people, which I only learned recently - my mom would be disappointed in my research skills) writes banter that actually sounds like how couples fight-flirt. The "love-hate" dynamic doesn't feel manufactured. These two genuinely get under each other's skin and it's entertaining.

Now. The spice level. Some reviewers complained there's too much focus on the physical stuff. And yeah, if you're looking for deep character backstory or plot twists, this ain't it. But the description literally says "steamy, combative relationship" so I'm not sure what people expected? It's like complaining that a trauma center has too many emergencies. That's... the point.

Who's This For (And Who Should Run)

Grab this if you loved Beautiful Bastard and want more of these two idiots. Or if you need a palate cleanser between heavy reads. Or if you've got a short commute and want something complete in a few drives.

Skip it if explicit content isn't your thing. Or if you need the male narrator to match the character's energy - because that disconnect might pull you out of it the way it kept pulling me.

I ended up doing something I rarely do - I bumped the speed to 1.25x during Heyborne's chapters. Not because he was bad, but because the slower pace clashed with Bennett's supposed intensity. Helped a lot, actually.

Production quality is clean. No weird audio issues, no background noise, nothing that made me want to throw my phone out the car window. (Yes, that's happened with other audiobooks. The hospital parking garage has witnessed things.)

Clocking Out

This is comfort food. It's not trying to be a five-course meal. It's hot, it's funny, it's over before you know it. Grace Grant carries the emotional weight, and if you can get past the narrator mismatch, there's genuine fun to be had here.

My mom would absolutely not approve of this book. Which, honestly, is part of the appeal.

Night shift approved - with caveats.
