Anna Zaires doesn't pretend this is anything other than what it is - a fantasy about a powerful man becoming absolutely obsessed with an ordinary woman. Marcus's pursuit of Emma borders on stalker territory (there's definitely a content warning conversation to be had here), but York's delivery somehow makes it feel more romantic than creepy. Mostly. The steam scenes around the midpoint? Carlos asked why I was sitting in the driveway for an extra ten minutes. I blamed traffic.
Two Narrators, One Problem
Ava Erickson as Emma is perfect casting. Her voice has this lofty, slightly dreamy quality that fits a woman who'd rather be reading than adulting. When she does Marcus's voice in Emma's chapters, it actually works - she captures his intensity without trying to go full baritone.
York, though. His Marcus is chef's kiss. That gravelly authority sells the Wall Street titan completely. But when he has to voice female characters? It's... not great. I didn't yell at my dashboard (that's reserved for medical inaccuracies), but I did wince. The dual narration mostly saves this - you get each POV from the right voice most of the time. Just brace yourself for the exceptions.
The chemistry between the narrators carries the audiobook. They're not recording together, but something about how they're edited makes the relationship feel real. When Marcus and Emma finally connect emotionally (not just physically), both performers nail the vulnerability. That same emotional payoff is what makes It Starts with Us work so well—the narrators there also understand that vulnerability is what sells the romance. Erickson especially - there's a moment where Emma's walls come down and you can hear the exact second it happens.
The Cliffhanger Situation
Okay, I need to talk about this ending. Because I finished the book, pulled into my garage, and said out loud: "Wait, that's IT?"
This is book one of a series. The ending is a cliffhanger. Not a gentle "to be continued" but a full-on "buy the next book RIGHT NOW" situation. If you hate that, you've been warned. If you're like me and you've worked enough night shifts to know that delayed gratification builds character, you'll survive. But maybe have book two ready.
The pacing does stretch in places - there's a middle section where Marcus's pursuit feels repetitive, and I found myself checking how much time was left. At just over seven hours, it's not a huge commitment, but tighter editing would've helped. A few dead air pockets too, nothing major, but noticeable if you're paying attention.
Who Should Queue This Up (And Who Should Skip)
If you want a contemporary romance with heat, dual POV, and a hero who's basically a walking red flag that you'll root for anyway - this delivers. Perfect for that post-shift decompression when your brain is too fried for anything complicated. The steam wakes you up, the romance is predictable in a comforting way, and York's voice is genuinely worth the listen.
Skip it if you need deep character development and realistic relationship building. This is wish fulfillment, not a relationship manual. Also skip if cliffhangers make you rage-quit series entirely.

Worth a credit if you're a romance fan who knows what they're getting into. The narration elevates it - Erickson and York are both pros, even with York's female voice issues. Just know it's the first in a series, the hero is intense bordering on obsessive, and the content is definitely adult. I'm already queuing up book two. Carlos will just have to wait a few more minutes in the driveway.
