What happens when you finally get the second chance you've been waiting for, but the person who shows up isn't the same one who left?

I finished this one during Sophie's nap time—a full week of naps, which honestly felt like a miracle on multiple levels. The book, the naps, all of it. Carley Fortune's Meet Me at the Lake is exactly the kind of contemporary romance that works for my chaotic listening life. Not too complicated, emotionally satisfying, and it survived being paused approximately 8,000 times without losing me.

The Slow Burn That Actually Pays Off

Look, I'm a sucker for the "one day together" premise. Two strangers, one random encounter, a promise made—and then life happens. Fern and Will's initial connection during those twenty-four hours in Toronto felt genuine in a way that a lot of romance setups don't. They weren't just flirting. They were actually talking. Sharing real things. The kind of conversation you have at 2 AM with someone you'll probably never see again, except you desperately want to.

And then he doesn't show up. Nine years later, he appears at her family's struggling lakeside resort with a suitcase and an offer to help. I mean, the audacity. But also—okay, I was hooked.

The dual timeline works really well here. Past and present fit together without getting confusing (crucial for my constantly-interrupted listening situation). Fortune knows how to build tension slowly. The chemistry between Fern and Will simmers rather than explodes, which I appreciated. Sometimes you don't need the dramatic kiss in chapter three. Sometimes the anticipation IS the point.

A.J. Bridel Nailed the Longing

Here's the thing about romance audiobooks—the narrator has to sell the yearning. If I'm not feeling the tension, what's even the point? A.J. Bridel gets it. Her voice is warm and soothing without being sleepy, confident without being over-the-top. She captures that ache of wanting someone you're not sure you should trust anymore.

The character voices are solid across the board. Will sounds like Will. Fern's internal monologue feels natural rather than like someone reading a script. There's this relaxed, easygoing quality to Bridel's performance that made it perfect for my car-sitting-in-the-garage sessions. (Don't judge. That's my quiet time.)

One small thing—the chapters from Fern's mother's perspective don't quite land the same way. The voice isn't as distinct, and I occasionally had to reorient myself. Not a dealbreaker, but noticeable. Carley Fortune also reads some parts herself, which adds a nice personal touch. Authors reading their own work can go either way, but it works here.

Where It Gets Real

This isn't just a fluffy romance. There's actual emotional weight—family loss, secrets, the messiness of going back to the place you swore you'd leave behind. Fern's struggle with running her mother's resort while dealing with her own grief hit closer to home than I expected. Sometimes you end up living a life that looks nothing like what you planned, and that's... a lot to sit with.

The mystery of why Will didn't show up nine years ago unfolds gradually. I won't spoil it, but it's not what I expected. Fortune handles the reveal with care, and it reframes everything you thought you knew about their connection.

Is it groundbreaking literature? No. But sometimes you don't need groundbreaking. Sometimes you need a story that believes in second chances and delivers a satisfying ending that doesn't make you ugly-cry at school pickup. (Okay, I maybe got a little misty. In my car. Alone. It's fine.)

Who's This For (And Who Should Skip)

At just under ten hours, this is perfect for a week of multitasking. Commutes, nap times, hiding in the bathroom pretending you don't hear anyone calling your name. The pacing is steady—it doesn't drag, but it's not rushing either. I listened at my usual 1.25x and it felt just right.

If you loved Every Summer After, you'll probably love this too. Fortune has a thing for lakeside settings and complicated histories, and she does it well. It's comfort reading in the best way. My book club would eat this up if I ever had time for book club again. Speaking of book club picks, Big Little Lies has that same blend of emotional depth and page-turning momentum that makes you forget you're supposed to be doing laundry.

Listen if: you want a second-chance romance with real emotional stakes and a narrator who understands longing. Skip if: you need fast-paced action or can't handle dual timelines while being interrupted by small humans.

Bottom line: it's warm, it's emotional, it's exactly what I needed between refereeing sibling fights and negotiating with a toddler about wearing pants. Car time approved. Nap time approved. Satisfying ending—exactly what I needed.
