What happens when you've been following a couple through their messy, beautiful, kinky journey and you finally get to the wedding book? Do you ugly-cry? Do you hold your breath through every chapter wondering what's going to derail them this time?

Yes. The answer is yes to all of it.

The Emotional Gut-Punches Hit Different This Time

Look, I've been with Sophie and Neil since the beginning of this series, and Ex felt like watching two people I actually know work through their stuff before the big day. Abigail Barnette (who's really Jenny Trout, if you didn't know) does this thing where she writes BDSM romance that feels... responsible? Like, the power dynamics are hot, but they're also built on actual communication and trust. Which shouldn't be revolutionary but somehow still is.

This book digs into Neil's past trauma in ways the earlier books only hinted at, and honestly? I was not prepared. I was working on a logo redesign for a local brewery, headphones in, Diego curled up on my keyboard (as usual), and suddenly I'm pausing the audio because I need a minute. The way Barnette peels back Neil's layers—this wickedly sadistic billionaire who's actually carrying decades of pain—it's the kind of character work that makes you forget you're listening to a romance novel. That same depth is what made me fall hard for Beach Read—two writers with serious emotional baggage learning to trust each other.

The "unexpected houseguest" situation adds this whole other layer of tension that had me genuinely stressed. Not in a bad way, but in a "I can't stop listening even though I should be meeting this deadline" way. Sophie balancing her career as a magazine editor with her unconventional family dynamics? That felt real. Messy. Human.

CJ Bloom Goes All In—Maybe Too All In

Okay, here's where I have to be honest with you. CJ Bloom's narration is passionate—like, she is IN it. You can tell she understands these characters and the emotional weight of what's happening. Her voice work during the intimate scenes? Chef's kiss. She doesn't shy away from the intensity, and for a book with this much spice, that matters.

But. (And this is a real but.)

The volume thing is... a lot. I listen at 1.0x because I'm savoring every word, and there were moments where I had to yank my earbuds out because she went from normal conversation to SUDDEN INTENSITY without warning. I design with my AirPods in for like six to eight hours a day, and my ears needed breaks they shouldn't have needed. If you're sensitive to volume fluctuations, this might drive you a little crazy.

It's frustrating because when she's good, she's really good. The passion is there. The emotional range is there. I just wish the production had smoothed out those peaks a bit. Abuela would've said something like "mija, why is she yelling?" and honestly, fair.

Four Books of Slow Burn Finally Catch Fire

What makes this series work—and what makes Ex specifically hit so hard—is that Barnette has been building toward this moment across multiple books. The wedding isn't just a plot point; it's an earned destination. All the pre-wedding jitters, the personal crises, the way Neil and Sophie have to keep choosing each other even when things get complicated? That's the good stuff.

This book felt like a rainy Sunday wrapped in a blanket, except the blanket is also kind of kinky and makes you cry. The chemistry between Sophie and Neil is still chef's kiss after all this time, and watching them explore new sensual territory while also dealing with very real emotional stakes? My heart. MY HEART. I get that same feeling from Shadow of Night—completely different genre, but the way Diana and Matthew's relationship deepens while they're dealing with actual life-or-death stakes? It's that perfect blend of intimacy and high stakes.

The vibes are immaculate if you're into character-driven romance that doesn't sacrifice heat for emotional depth. It's intimate. It's messy. It's the kind of book where you finish and immediately want to text someone about it.

Your Ears vs. Your Heart

If you've been following The Boss series, this is essential. If you're new, start from the beginning—you'll appreciate the payoff more.

Best for: anyone who wants their romance with emotional weight, fans of responsible BDSM representation, people who aren't afraid to ugly-cry during a spicy scene.

Maybe skip the audio if: volume fluctuations make you want to throw things, or if you need calm narration to focus. The ebook might be the move—the writing is strong enough to carry itself.

Diego Judged Me, But I Regret Nothing

I cried twice. Once during a scene about Neil's past, once near the end when everything came together. Added both to my spreadsheet. (Yes, I still keep the spreadsheet. No, I'm not apologizing for it.)

Abuela would've loved this one—the drama, the passion, the way love wins even when it's complicated. She would've clutched her rosary at the spicy parts and then asked me what happens next.
