Solomon Northup

Solomon Northup (c. 1807/1808 – after 1857) was a free-born African American from New York who was kidnapped and sold into slavery for twelve years in Louisiana. After regaining his freedom, he authored the memoir Twelve Years a Slave, which became a bestseller and an important historical document on slavery. He was also active in the abolitionist movement and lectured about his experiences.
