Lew Wallace (1827–1905) was an American lawyer, Union general in the Civil War, governor of New Mexico Territory, diplomat, and author from Indiana. He is best known for his historical adventure novel, Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1880), which became a bestselling and highly influential Christian book of the nineteenth century. Wallace also wrote biographies, narrative poems, and an autobiography published posthumously.
