John Taylor Gatto

John Taylor Gatto (1935–2018) was an American author and school teacher who taught in New York City public schools for nearly 30 years. He was a vocal critic of the public education system, advocating for homeschooling, unschooling, and self-directed education. Gatto received multiple teaching awards, including New York City Teacher of the Year three times and New York State Teacher of the Year in 1991.
