John Foxe (1516â1587) was an English Puritan preacher, theologian, and historian best known for his work The Book of Martyrs, which documents the sufferings of early Christian and Protestant martyrs. His book was widely read and influential in shaping Protestant historical consciousness and English national identity. Foxe was educated at Oxford and spent time in exile during the reign of Mary I before returning to England under Elizabeth I.
