James Fenimore Cooper

James Fenimore Cooper (1789–1851) was an American writer known as the first major American novelist. He gained fame for his historical romances depicting colonial and indigenous characters, especially through his Leatherstocking Tales featuring the frontier scout Natty Bumppo. Cooper was a pioneer of American literature, popularizing American themes and settings distinct from European traditions.
