Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass (1818–1895) was an African American abolitionist, orator, newspaper publisher, and author. Born into slavery in Maryland, he escaped to freedom and became a leading voice in the abolitionist movement. He wrote three autobiographies detailing his life and the struggle against slavery.
