E L James, born Erika Mitchell in 1963, is a British author best known for her best-selling Fifty Shades series of erotic romance novels. She began writing after being inspired by the Twilight series and initially published fan fiction before her novels gained mainstream success. James has been recognized as one of Time magazine's Most Influential People and has won several literary awards.
