Dhan Gopal Mukerji (1890-1936) was an influential Indian-American writer and the first successful Indian man of letters in the United States. He is best known for his children's books that vividly portray Indian culture and landscapes, including 'Kari the Elephant' and 'Gay Neck: The Story of a Pigeon'. Mukerji won the 1928 Newbery Medal for 'Gay Neck'.
