Alban Butler

Alban Butler (1710-1773) was an English Roman Catholic priest and scholar, known primarily for his extensive work on hagiography. He devoted about thirty years to researching and writing 'Lives of the Saints,' a comprehensive collection of biographies of over 1,600 saints. He served as a professor and later as president of the English seminary at Saint Omer in France.
