Robert Charles Benchley (1889–1945) was an American humorist, newspaper columnist, actor, and drama critic known for his affable, self-mocking style blending everyday ineptitude with sharp observation. He was a founding member of the Algonquin Round Table and contributed influential essays to The New Yorker. Benchley also made a name in Hollywood, winning an Academy Award for his short film How to Sleep in 1935.
