W. S. Gilbert

Sir William Schwenck Gilbert (1836–1911) was an English playwright, poet, librettist, and illustrator best known for his collaboration with Arthur Sullivan on comic operas. Before his operatic fame, he wrote The Bab Ballads, a collection of humorous light verse illustrated with his own drawings. Gilbert's work influenced other dramatists and contributed significantly to English comic literature.
