Phoebe Yates Pember

Phoebe Yates Pember (1823–1913) was a Confederate hospital administrator and author, known for her role as matron of Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War. Born into a wealthy Jewish family in Charleston, South Carolina, she managed one of the largest military hospitals of the time and later wrote detailed memoirs about her experiences. Her work provides a realistic and vivid account of hospital life and Southern society during the war.
