Flora Sandes

Flora Sandes (1876–1956) was a British woman who uniquely served as a soldier in the Royal Serbian Army during World War I, the only British woman to do so officially. Initially a St John Ambulance volunteer, she joined the Serbian army, rising to sergeant major and later senior captain, and was awarded the Order of the Karađorđe's Star, Serbia's highest military decoration. She authored her wartime experiences in her 1916 autobiography.
