Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875â1956) was an English novelist, humorist, and journalist, best known for inventing the clerihew, a whimsical four-line biographical verse. He authored the classic detective novel Trent's Last Case (1913), considered the first modern mystery, and served as president of the Detection Club from 1936 to 1949.
